I'm actually itching for a real competitor for Gateway, that can motivate them to provide updates. Cloners don't do this.

This pretty much destroys your entire argument. If patent law didn't exist, those companies would have flooded the market with viagra _TWENTY YEARS AGO_. The Viagra patent is quite old, that is why this is happening with it now.

I won't care if people start cloning Gateway in 2030, when all development of it has ceased long ago.

Patents aren't universal protection against counterfeiters or copycats. You're acting as though they're perfectly valid in every country, or that they're even rigorously enforced in the countries they are valid in, or some that people don't break the law anyway, just for the thrill of it. Even if Gateway could protect themselves with a patent (and it would have to be a software patent, which are valid in even fewer places in the world), it wouldn't stop counterfeits and clones appearing.

Seriously, though, I could be playing games instead of feeding trolls, so feel free to argue with my posts as much as you like. I'm done.

I disagree. Until Devin updates his reviews (should he choose to do so) I think highlighting the fact that R4i/3DSLink don't create their own software for their flashcards is useful information for prospective buyers. Someone mentioned this earlier in the thread; the fact that people might not realize that the 20$ they save by buying a knockoff might bite them in the ass in the long run.

justinkb is simply right. we are discussing about gateway and r4i, so why are you coming here saying "you should boycott pirates in the first place"? there must have been tens of people saying the exact same thing through the entire thread, and almost none of them even cared about seeing if someone else already said it.
as justinkb said multiple times, this thread's purpose is very practical: it is discussing wether it is good or bad for clones to exist, and therefore to decide between "boycotting" them or not. it's not that this thread was made to create a sort of movement that actively boycotts the clones in any way it can. thanks to the contributions of people who share their point of view, anybody who reads it can decide which flashcart he/she thinks is better to buy for him/herself and/or for the community. frankly, I don't think that anyone who finds this thread useful cares about piracy, so don't lose your and other people's time repeating the same things over and over again. over here, it's useless and just clogs up the thread.

p.s. maybe it's better to change the thread's title by putting "??" at the end.

As long as we have China, we have clones/ripoffs/knockoffs , It makes the world go round.. Half the world cant afford 1st world prices, its the reality, hence why its so rampant everywhere, with majority being manafactured in China, alot of the time at same factorys as original
