I'm having trouble running the update. Whenever I load the update, it says on the bottom that the "update is cancled, reboot DS" even before I press a button. I know I'm using the right file, but somehow I can't update my AK2i. Any ideas why?
Are you updating from the 3DS, DSi or the DS lite? Make sure you're using the correct update file on the dedicated system. Also, (sorry I read to quickly)
Check if your buttons are working properly. Maybe something is stuck in them so the button is pressed even when you're not doing it.

What HWID is your AK2i? Only HWID 81 / 8181 is compatible. To check, at the main menu press START, then go to "Help". At the bottom of the help menu you will see the HWID.

I'm using HWID 81, SVN 1134 (If that helps). I'm updating using my 3DS, which is still on firmware 4.2.0-9U. The name of the file I am using to update is "ak2ifw_update_3ds43_dsi144_onDSi_DSXL_3DS.nds", which is the correct file, right?

I'm also pretty sure the buttons aren't the problem, or else I'd have random clicking everywhere.

With the update, also put the update in an "Update" folder on the root of your sd, that seemed to fix the "cancelled" issue for me.

Also, I hadn't used mine in a while and wouldn't work at first and turned out to be a contact issue. After placing a piece of paper behind the contacts on the PCB it worked flawlessly on my 3ds.

YESS. I followed all of advice, and THERE WE GO. Update.
I reformatted it, used the Acekard official firmware, used an update folder, and put paper under the PCB. So yeah, maybe I was a little paranoid, but as long as it works, I'm totally okay with it.
Thank you guys so much. I really appreciate your help.

You guys sure are lucky...
1. For me, I just got my 3DS XL the other day and got it updated.
2. Hence, I had to update my Acekard 2i using a DSL.
3. It all went okay, and I managed to start a game (the world ends with you) until the whole thing freezed,
4. Then there's the error screen requiring me to reboot.
5. After rebooting, the icon is has changed to the Acekard 2i icon and starting it results in an error screen, while booting it in DSL will have it "Loading" forever...
Oh ya, my Acekard is a new one, just bought it the same day as the 3DS XL...

Any ideas how to fix this?

finally, 'bout time they atleast released something. :D

EDIT:
alright, just updated, doesn't work. :/ I got some japanese text as the title of the game and a red-ish white logo. I updated with my dslite, and it works fine with that.

Where did you buy it from and have you checked that it's genuine?

Hi Bazamuffin,

Well, I bought it online from a guy from a forum, the forum's like 23 pages on Acekard2is alone, so should be trustworthy enough... I does have an acekard flashy sticker behind the card, other than that, I really have no idea where to check if it's genuine...

Make sure you copied the firmware (akaio) to your card

I had the same issue twice - each time after updating the firmware of the 2i. Both times, it was resolved by connecting the SD card to a PC, copying all contents over, formatting the card and putting everything back in, minus AKAIO - then putting a fresh AKAIO installation on it.

I'd also like to report that this particular firmware update appears to have certain SDHC issues, and while most games work fine, new ones have issues. For example, Pokemon Conquest returns a FAT Error when played from SDHC while it loads instantly from a standard SD. Similarily Pokemon White 2 (J - patched with the 2.3 translation) loads forever and lags on FMV sections after (if is more appropriate) it does. Keep that in mind if you are interested in these two games.

can anyone help? i updated my acekard, it has the right HWID and such, but everytime i put it in my 3DS it says an error occured, and i have to shut the system off(the normal reaction to blocked flashcards). i updated on my dslite, and it worked fine with that... could it be because of region locking or something? i have a pal(european) 3ds. i also saw in earlier posts the icon should be some horse head, but instead i get some red tie or something. more like red-pinkish balls.

Hmm from what i can see you have downgraded your acekard, but no problem since you have a DSL, now can you take a screenshot to your SD Card folder?

Actually I can't even get the Acekard running in my DSL, it just gets stuck on the loading screen...
Yes you can but you probably dont have the right files in the sd

yall im torn... ive been hacking away at tales of phantasia GBA (the USA version) and have so many documents of reverse engineering i've done
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I just found out that the EU version is better in literally every way, better sound quality, better lighting, and there's even a patch someone made to make the text look nicer
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
Do I restart now using what i've learned on the EU version since it's a better overall experience? or do I continue with the US version since that is what ive been using, and if someone decides to play my hack, it would most likely be that version?
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    I appreciate the insight!
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@TwoSpikedHands just switch, all the knowledge you learned still applies and most of the code and assets should be the same anyway
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    and realistically they wouldn't

be able to play it legally anyway since they need a ROM and they probably don't have the means to dump it themselves

why the shit does the shitbox randomly insert newlines in my messages

It does that when I edit a post.

  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@Karma177 that sd card is 100% faulty so yes, its a bad idea
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
even the slowest non-sdhc sd cards are a few MB/s
  • Karma177 @ Karma177:
@The Real Jdbye it hasn't given me any error trying to write things on it so I don't really think it's faulty (pasted 40/50gb+ folders and no write errors)
