PS1/2 PS1 no longer recognising CD-R's

I've had this pack of Verbatim CD-R's for about a year now and PS1 games I burnt onto them longer ago (at 8x write speed) like King's Field and Klonoa still work fine. For more recent games I've tried like MGS and Tail Concerto though, the discs just stop spinning and my console goes to the menu as if it doesn't recognise the format. Could the discs have degraded? They've been safe inside their plastic cover this whole time.

If they're only a year old, I would think it unlikely they have degraded -- CDs in this piece of research had a longevity of 30 years, although I'm uncertain on the quality differences from different manufacturers. My guess is that the laser is dying -- there should be a potentiometer somewhere on the laser assembly that you could try adjusting (be sure to mark where you're at before adjusting in case it's some other issue). Otherwise, a new laser assembly is also an option, you can get these on eBay relatively cheap. I'm not very familiar with the PS1, but you might want to check out if there are different lasers for different models if the PS1 (there certainly are for the PS2)

I used a different writer and that turned out to be the source of the problem, guess I need to throw this one out. Thanks so much for your advice!
