Nintendo 3DS source code leaked

3ds.png

Two in a row today!

The item of interest, barely four hours after the last major drop, consists of partial source code for the Nintendo 3DS family updated as of October 2014:

  • Source code for the 3DS bootroms and kernels, including modules (drivers) for 3DS mode.
  • Precompiled DSi and GBA bootroms (the latter being the NDS variant).
  • Source code for most developer titles, including many not directly released to licensed developers.

The above list is the result of a cursory analysis: it may contain inaccuracies. However, notably, it does not contain any regular system application or applet, meaning the inevitable question about what this means for the 300 icon limit can already be answered.

Could this lead to better emulation of the 3DS, or not really?
Even "if", then to make it look legal it will take good amount of time before you will see results. So you won't see anything in this year if any of 3DS emulator devs decide to risk.

That would make more sense, in this case. I haven't thought of this possibility.

The developer community for Wii and Wii U are unfortunately more aware of the Switch.
It would be great to have a CFW for those two consoles and even a single one that serves to unify everything.

Emulators will never, ever, ever be able to use the contents of these leaks. This kind of thing can put them in serious legal trouble. Refer to this tweet back when Wii source leaked:

I mean to be fair, the Vita also has a freeshop. It's called PKGJ
yeah it does, but it also took an insane amount of effort to get to that point though, the general security of the vita greatly surpasses the 3ds

I think it's worth mentioning these leaks most likely all come from the same source who obtained the files around 2018. It's not that the files are slowly being leaked off Nintendo, it's that they're slowly being let out to the general public.
maybe TX has someone on the inside
maybe that's how they got the switch hacks 1st and so fast
maybe the rumors are true and one of them was behind GW too
maybe they threatened NIntnedo with a release about the lawsuits and they refused
so they keep on releasing more stuff
or maybe it's retaliation for the Nintnedo's behavior lately

Is this going to be another, "nothing to see here. Everything's that needs to be figured out has already been figured out"?
I am sure the analysis of it will be doing the rounds of hacker circles and conference talks for years to come.

As it stands though you have total control over a hacked system with easy to execute hacks. ROM hacks probably won't be improved or enhanced by this (some of the leaked game source code stuff might be a different matter, and there might be a tool or two that someone has not made a homebrew equivalent for). Homebrew already has total access. Emulation is more or less a matter of degree/how many shortcuts can you get away with or make work better (to a standard you already know) rather than still figuring new things out and implementing them (though emulation is still just about janky enough and these examples almost pure enough that maybe some small bugs somewhere).

Likewise sensible homebrew coders, possibly ROM hackers and emulator authors will probably have to treat these as radioactive (reusing copyrighted code or access to things you were not supposed to or lied to get is generally a start of a bad time for all those).

although that doesnt mean,,, hey lets see how they did it, oh so thats it, let me do it in my own way with my own code =)
If there are bugs, intentional or otherwise, in that code then even "redoing it in their own words" might have those bugs shine through and could well give the game away. Not to mention if you have taken the time to understand something you might as well have just learned it from hardware documentation or poking it yourself.

I'd be down for Nintendo being punished for their atrocious Online features and no support of anything other than NES and SNES, on top of years of other stupid decisions that lead homebrew communities to pick up their slack.

I’m in no way a hacker but I feel like it’s cooler like that. Makes you appreciate the work that they put in for the emulator rather than just ripping code and rearranging it

100% behind this.

Nintendo had it coming for years, if not decades for how shitty they've treated fans and the homebrew community altogether.
It's obvious that many people is getting tired of their shit, so now hackers are firing back, and Nintendo is the one to lose more from this than them.

I'm glad they're being fucked over from all fronts, I'd be lying if I said I wasn't.
They deserve it :)

Just a random question what can be the use of this? I thought all 3ds have been modded and there is a good functioning emulator (citra) I don't know how anyone can utilize this and besides the 3DS is at EOL anyway.

They have been through the ringer on this series of console data leaks, now i imagine every console data is free to look at..

not the gameboy but Zelda DX had some discoveries some years ago

As for game and watch depending upon what version they are that might be difficult -- the G&W stuff might not even be emulation in the strictest sense of the term as much as simulation as there is no real central CPU, instructions, memory or anything we typically recognise as a computer and instead almost pure logic.
To that end G&W source code would be the form of a transistor decap or arrangement diagram, or any design docs that might exist of people prototyping things.

No, that's the guy that made freeshop.
No, that was Cruel. He's referring to RyanRocks. Unfortunately pedophilia has been a running theme in the Nintendo scene.

I'm glad somebody said it. This is what many were hoping for out of the other previous leaks. Emulator developers stride to not be illegal, and quite honestly, using stolen sources would really impact the spirit of emulation.

Can anyone explain whether this can help 3ds emulation going forward or not.
How about homebrew development?

Probably helps to understand how the hardware works. Coders are not allowed to use the Source Code for emulation.
