Nintendo 3DS source code leaked

3ds.png

Two in a row today!

The item of interest, barely four hours after the last major drop, consists of partial source code for the Nintendo 3DS family updated as of October 2014:

  • Source code for the 3DS bootroms and kernels, including modules (drivers) for 3DS mode.
  • Precompiled DSi and GBA bootroms (the latter being the NDS variant).
  • Source code for most developer titles, including many not directly released to licensed developers.

The above list is the result of a cursory analysis: it may contain inaccuracies. However, notably, it does not contain any regular system application or applet, meaning the inevitable question about what this means for the 300 icon limit can already be answered.

Its disheartening how close this is to finally revealing the key to the 300 title limit for the 3DS without actually doing it. But this leak is only a partial leak, the one time when it's not a full leak is where it would benefit the hacking scene the most.

Is this going to be another, "nothing to see here. Everything's that needs to be figured out has already been figured out"?

Let's hope for custom firmware to be a thing.
Nintendo emulators should be able to profit how the system really works now.

Emulators can't legally use this.

How about the DS, was the source code ever leaked?

No, but there's also no way to know if people use the leaks as a guide while still writing their own code. Coding is more about the general "how" rather than specifics. For example someone might see how Nintendo process visual data, and figure out from that how to avoid certain graphical glitches.

This is extremely concerning. At this point I'm going to remove all of my credit card and personal info from my Nintendo account. If something as critical as this is leaking, what are the chances they're doing a good job of protecting our data? Low, I'd say.

Get your shit together Nintendo!

Hope this means hackers will steal some information and make updates for older flash carts for 3DS. Probably not though, as I assume they have totally lost interest in the console.

With people having more time on their hands to hack during to COVID-19, every company should have, in hindsight, taken measures to improve their security.
