Square Enix accidentally releases update for Final Fantasy IX that deletes the game entirely

header (5).jpg

It looks like someone over at Square Enix accidentally pushed out an update for the Steam version of Final Fantasy IX. What does this update do? Well, it deletes the game entirely, for anyone that was unfortunate enough to download the latest patch. SteamDB shows that an update for the game went out early on April 2nd that does nothing more than remove every asset and file from the game, rendering it unplayable. Presumably, a fix will be out imminently to undo this, and when that happens, you can expect an update within this news post.

Plus the fact SE had to fix this by pushing out an older version of their software doesn't help the matters either, because it shows they don't keep backups of their source code, a reason why the original FF7 for Windows 9x was based on their Beta of the PSX release and not the full release.
What exactly is the basis for that statement?

In any case, I don't think you can easily compare software development practices from 23 years ago to how it is today, especially considering how relatively complex the game's development was at the time.

The only real benefit of the PC port is the higher-quality models compared to the PSX version. Other than that, the vanilla port on Steam has completely broken sound effects and inferior background images for the pre-rendered scenes, both of which can only be fixed via modding. Square Enix didn't even do the port, they outsourced it to some no-name inferior team called Silicon Studios Thailand.

Y'all need religion!
This is a discussion about Final Fantasy -- crusades, various islamic conquests, civil wars for any number of religions... they have nothing on Final Fantasy related flame wars.

hope this means an actual substantial update is in the works.

it's the quintessential final fantasy. It took and boiled down all those things that made final fantasy, final fantasy, and honed them best it could. So if you dislike this one, you probably won't like any final fantasy from the nes-psx era :P the new ones, starting at final fantasy X, intentionally broke away from tradition and have been trying to reinvent what it means to be final fantasy every game. Some love it, some hate it. but ff9 was the last "traditional" final fantasy game, for better or worse.
Normally I would question whether lumping the PS1 era and 6 and earlier is a thing you can do.
That said I am more here to ask did I imagine Final Fantasy IV: The After Years? The 4 Heroes of Light also did something that might be close enough to count, especially if you are lumping the PS1 era in with that.

Anyway just to toss an oily rag on the smouldering pile. FF9 is a solid effort but FF5 is where it is at. 6 is for those that like boring stories and worse characters.

I have never seen a company bungle up when it comes to PC ports as much as Square Enix has.

Anyone know what the file size of that patch was? Logically, it shouldn't surpass a couple of megabytes tops, but knowing the state of the industry it probably still comes in at 5 gigabytes or more.

*reads some replies *

I have no idea what people are talking about, but sure : I'll play along. ^_^

Hey guys : IIX was better than VVI but VX sucked compared to the remake of the spinoff of the remaster of the standalone version of tactics. Also : II, III, IV, IX, XII, VII and on sunny days XIV!!!

You can't be taken seriously if you think what I said is "y'all need 'crusades, various islamic conquests, civil wars for any number of religions'" ('for' being bold to emphasize your departure from the subject). The way you are talk hurt makes it obvious that what I said is pertinent to you especially. To top that all off you acknowledge the existence of FF5 yet insinuate FF6 has the lesser of character/story development. MWAHAHAHAHA!

6 attempts more but misses.

Also I don't get your objection.
You say you all need religion.
I say Final Fantasy is one -- its flame wars have caused more death, destruction, hurt feelings, irrationality, unassailable scripture, lost friendships and international strife than any of the major world religions and their internal and external conflicts.
Which is to say both of us taking the piss the entire time.
