Unfortunately this threat / first post is not maintained that well

:!: PCSX ReARMed for 3DS right now works best with ".pbp" (PlayStation Portable "eboot.PBP" files) :!:

Convert your PS1 backups (BIN files) with  PSX2PSP into the .PBP (compressed) format, to increases comparability and prevent audio & video stuttering. This can cause huge frame drops and can make a game unplayable or crash in rare cases entirely.

While at it, also make sure you use either an nigtly build from 03-03-2020 or later. Or a recent unofficial build.

Have your games converted to either .pbp (medium compression) or .chd,
Have dithering disabled,
Try with or without asynchronous disc reading.

Attempted to convert and play three games (Clocktower, Intelligent Qube, Biohazard directors cut). None worked. One caused an error forcing reboot the other two kicked it back to the main menu.

Just in case: official PSN / PS3 "eboot.pbp" versions do not work. Usually they kick you to the main menu.

You need to convert PS1 bin files to PBP. Or try another dump / other source.

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

Hey, thanks trying to help.

But I worked it out a few days before. I took some time, researching and multiple attempts. However everything runs pretty well so far - even with the last staple version of RA.

I just wanted to update my postings to avoid 'more' confusion what this list is for / on what the results are based on and what I did to improve performance. Since there is not 1 threat that got all the information in one place / post. (so far I know)

Since your original post begins with Retroarch v1.8.3, i'm a bit confused.
The current nightly is at v1.8.5, with quite some improvements made to specifically PCSX-ReARMed.

Wrong ! .chd is the best format, better than .pbp !
By the way, anyone made "Viewpoint [SLUS-00033]" works at the level 2 start ? I have no control enable contrary to level 1.
It does it only with ntsc version, pal is ok. Why ?

PBP images are not working. I tested Intelligent Qube, Clock Tower and Biohazard dc. The only one that worked was Thrill kill. Two of the games red-screened and IQ kicked me back to the main menu, some message about "not enough" came up

. SAM_3076.JPG

The same three games (IQ, Clock tower, Biohazard) work very well with CHD.

I can confirm that PaRappa The Rapper runs... at an abysmal 19 FPS. I was SO CLOSE. For some reason, RetroArch didn't realized that I had put my PS1 BIOS in the correct directory and used the horrible HLE bios.

Same goes for Gran Turismo, and Un Jammer Lammy refused to boot.

Hold up, the reason behind it is that I was using the 3DSX version instead of the CIA version. my mistake

Guys, i'm updating the excel. I've also added some usefull info about setting games.
Remember that CHD usually is better and, if you will make tons of reports, ask the permission to edit the excel xD

CHD and PBP are much faster, yeah :-) You could also mention settings that work for most games: Vsync off, dithering off, CD Read Method: Async. I think those are the big ones.

Do you have any insights or recommendations on the level of compression to apply when creating CHDs and PBPs? And thanks for all your excellent upgrades to the core!

I guess is enouth : Notes: If you see black lines all over the screen just set Forced Interlace and Pixel Skip to Off. Setting Video and Audio Sincronization OFF usually boost a lot FPS. You can also set: CD Read Method: Async and dithering off.

Nope, I've just used the default when creating CHDs. If someone has noticed a difference, it'd be good to get that information somewhere.

If both vsync and audio sync are off, I think the frame limit doesn't apply, so it'll go past 60fps. If you have to disable just one of them, vsync off will usually be faster.

It's one of the downsides, but it make fast and smooth ton of games, imao. I guess i can also add a note about this.

When running the latest stable 1.8.5 and trying to use .bin or .chd Parappa ran really badly for me as well. But I just converted it to .pbp with psx2psp on compression level 5 and it runs pretty much 60 fps for me now (default settings, no video filter). Could finish both the onion guy and the moose lady without issue. Will try Um Jammer Lammy later.

Also, it turns out I only got 19 FPS because I was using the 3DSX version. I used it because with the CIA version, every new core you try literally installs that core to the HOME Menu, thus leading to MASSIVE clutter.

Also, please call the "onion guy" and the "moose lady" by their full names.

Tried Um Jammer Lammy now, also converted to .pbp with compression level 5 and it was pretty good (almost 60 fps all the time) but the fps dips still made playing hard because of lagging audio. Setting "CD Access Method" to "Asynchonous" seems to have fixed it at least for the first level. (Haven't played further yet.)

UPDATE: Second and third level are fine as well.
UPDATE 2:
4th level is fine.
5th level has heavy slowdowns in intermissions only so the level is still playable.
6th level on the other hand has massive slowdowns during gameplay caused by skeletons shooting lightning when having a "bad" rating. It is still possible to beat the level though, just a lot harder during slowdown.
7th level was fine again.

A few I've been playing recently. All three of these I finished on 3DS. All of them (except Suikoden) were played with vsync off, dithering off, cd access: async.

Suikoden 1 / CHD / 1.8.3 nightly / 59-60fps / Totally playable. Some slight slowdown when selecting party members and during some magic effects.

Chrono Cross / CHD / 1.8.5 / mostly 55-60fps with drops / Playable, in that I did a full playthrough. Field mostly stays locked at 60fps. Battles, spell effects can drop to 40-45fps, but mostly run fine after a while. CD read: Async helps with battle animations. High-res menus mostly run at 35fps.

Um Jammer Lammy / CHD / 1.8.5 / 59-60fps / Mostly fullspeed, some framerate drops with lightning in the island level. Turn CD Access: Async on.

Some others I've done very light testing with. Haven't played more than an hour in any of these.

Metal Gear Solid / CHD / 1.8.5 / 40-60fps / Effects and cutscenes chug. Seems to play OK otherwise. Would probably be playable with frameskip.

Doom / CHD / 1.8.5 / 59-60fps
Rayman / CHD / 1.8.5 / 59-60fps
Twisted Metal 2 / CHD / 1.8.5 / 59-60fps

Crash 1 / CHD / 1.8.5 / 45-60fps / Generally hovers around 50fps in the first few levels. Plays fine with Frameskip 1.

Diablo / CHD / 1.8.5 / 30-40fps / Must turn CD Access: Async or it's unplayable. With it on, it seems to run well with frameskip 1.

Einhander / CHD / 1.8.5 / 59-60 fps / Seems fullspeed so far.

PS: Ask permission to edit the excel :)

Sure!

Yes, I requested access yesterday with a note that's me. Requested again. No Prob :)

I'm not confident enough right now using google excel again. It's been a while since I used it. Probably will download this file or export to my google account and get used to it by editing locally

So far I have been enjoying the latest version of this core on my n3DS, I can finally play SotN at 60fps!

But I'm here because some games have a weir issue, there are annoying vertical lines and ghosting appearing across the screen, like this:
20200401_212912.jpg

I tried to change every config to defaults with no suceess, no shaders are being applied.

This happens on:

Pacman World
Toy Story 2: Buzz Light Year to the rescue
Toy Story Racer
Parasite Eve (Disc 1)

Games are in chd format and I'm using the sph1001 bios.

Thanks in advance!
