In simpler terms, the reason it does not work is because Nintendo has not distributed the encryption key to decrypt the game. It will be sent out on the game's release. There is no way to get this key otherwise.

I wonder if Nintendo has stepped up from last year when they accidentally leaked the full version of smash bros ultimate a month ahead of released. I would assume so.

That is not related to the preload
before explaining how it got leaked, is important to know that it got leaked 1 week and 5 days before launch, not 1 month
The game, same as the majority of switch and 3ds games that got leaked, got shipped to stores 2 weeks before launch, that way, the stores would be ready to sell the game physically at launch, some stores either break this launch date (which normally stop getting games before launch if they do that) or have employees that get their hands on a copy and dumps it and upload it to the internet, this is what happened to Smash
Actually, Smash got leaked 3 or 4 days before what I mentioned earlier, but that leak was private (a lot of games get leaked privately beween known dataminers or hackers(even people like SciresM that is a lot against piracy))
There are exceptions to this, like for example what happened to Paper Mario Color Splash, where Nintendo accidentally started delivering keys for preloads before launch (in other words, they leaked their own game)

Is pretty unlikely that the titlekey gets leaked, for this either the same that happened with Paper Mario have to happen, or someone who got a digital review copy have to dump it, both pretty unlikely, but not impossible

Be patient and wait.. or if you've got what it takes sure go ahead and reverse engineer it.
As @ihaveamac stated in his post above, currently we have no public decryption key available to us that could allow us to decrypt the game.
furthermore we have no tools at our disposal that could let us derive said cays, hence being unable to do the decryption.
Therefore you should be patient, June is just a month away which is not a long wait time.

FYI newer people, pre-loads do nothing the only reason to have it is so the majority of the game is already on your system, minus key files and day 1 patches,it's missing a key file,i saw these questions every releases on a 3ds rom site. It really started to bug me exp when you had 5 topics all the same how do i get this preload to work...egh. Not your fault just venting as i myself have asked really common questions everyone else knew.

Are you saying that you got smash just after the direct? Your thinking of having it 1 month before is just an illusion, as the game released on December 7th and it got leaked on November 24th

Yeah it was at least two weeks before it's release that people had it. I don't like Smash much so I played it a little but got bored. My niece bought the game so I ended up just doing most progression on her game.

@SylverReZ, atleast wiimmfii went fine although people only use it for Mario kart Wii
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
At least if they ban you for cheating, get another Wii. They're cheap as chips.

Remember when RiiShop was a thing?
  • BakerMan @ BakerMan:
    not really
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
It got shutdown because somebody "accidentally" leaked the database for the amount of people using the beta.
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
RiiShop is the laziest way of downloading Wii games. Did somebody not think of this through?
  • BakerMan @ BakerMan:
although i ended up accidentally changing my nand with no way of going back bc i didn't know you needed a gamecube controller to restore it (i have a wii minus/1.1, which doesn't have gamecube controller support)
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
@BakerMan, I think you're talking about the recovery mode that the SaveMii used, and also was to restore softbricked systems.
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
If your NAND was hardbricked, then just buy another Wii. Or go with the dirty NAND flasher method.
  • BakerMan @ BakerMan:
and if i find the sd card i have my NAND backed up on, i can not only restore the NAND if i solder the right part in, but i can also put my NAND on dolphin, then i can play dolphin online, like PMEX Remix or MKWii Riibalanced
  • Xdqwerty @ Xdqwerty:
    Brb
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
@BakerMan, Oh yeah, that was a thing too. Dolphin does support Wiimmfi.
  • BakerMan @ BakerMan:
yeah you just need to put your NAND backup with wiimmfi on it
  • BakerMan @ BakerMan:
ngl i feel like if a bunch of my friends have wiis and know how to get wiimmfi and back up their NAND, then we could do a PMEX Remix tournament
  • BakerMan @ BakerMan:
maybe even add UMVC3/DBFZ and make it a biathlon/triathlon

Too bad Excite Truck wasn't multi player :(
