Atari Announces Pre-Sale Date And Price For Its New Console, The 'Atari VCS'

atari vcs official.JPG

Atari's peculiar comeback in the console market was announced a while back. During that time the console's name changed from Ataribox to Atari VCS but we had yet to hear about a release date. In a press release today, Atari lifted the veil from some questions.

Pre-sales of its new Atari VCS hardware platform will start May 30, 2018. The pre-sale is exclusive to Indiegogo and features the time-limited Atari VCS Collector's Edition featuring the special retro-inspired wood-front:

In addition to the Collector's Edition, fans will have the option to pre-order the Atari VCS Onyx, a sleek black version. Early-bird Atari VCS packages will be offered, including the Onyx starting at $199 USD for a limited period of time.

Other packages will include the Classic Joystick and Modern Controller. Initial Atari VCS shipments are planned for Spring 2019. Fans who have signed up for "insider" email alerts at AtariVCS.com before May 24, 2018 will be eligible for special purchase incentives during the pre-sale.

The company also announced that it has partnered with AMD who will provide the Atari VCS custom processor with Radeon Graphics Technology.

Other features of the console announced include:
  • Support for 4K resolution, HDR and 60FPS content
  • Onboard and expandable storage options
  • Dual-band WiFi and Bluetooth 5.0
  • USB 3.0 support
A complete list of Atari VCS product specs will be posted with the pre-sale according to the press release.

Rather than being used solely for gaming, the Atari VCS aims to be a multimedia hub with access to other media and streaming options.

As an homage to the past, Atari VCS will cover the classics with the included Atari Vault of more than 100 classic games, including all-time arcade and home entertainment favorites like Asteroids, Centipede, Breakout, Missile Command, Gravitar and Yars' Revenge; a growing list of games, especially a full range of popular modern titles, will be announced at later dates.

"We continue moving forward on the Atari VCS project and are excited to see this pre-sale kickoff and to share more updates with our fans as we look toward the first shipments," notes Michael Arzt, Atari COO of Connected Devices. "We are building outstanding teams and forging alliances that will make this product great and truly worthy of the Atari VCS name. Expert hardware partners are helping make this project possible and we couldn't be more pleased with their contributions."

Do you think that there is a place for a fourth competitor in the gaming console market or does this feel like OUYA 2.0? Share your thoughts in the comments section below!

$199 for what, in practice, is a fancy Shield TV is VERY competitive, I'm actually really interested in this
Especially with Radeon graphics being great budget options. I'm actually curious as to what this system will bring us. Not just atari games, but the other options.

Ok I can understand being sceptical when preordering, but otherwise I don't get the people saying "just you wait! It'll be shit! Bwahaha!"
becuase they wont be selling media(well 6$ for 100 games wont earn them any money tbh) so they need to make money on the hardware they cant sell it at a loss, and with 200$ price and selling for profit what they have under the hood will be probably a slightly better shield tv running linux at best.

since for 200$ for a console and a controller to even be profitable hardware they need to put something prety crappy under the hood.

unlike sony and microsoft they cant sell a console at a loss and gain money on games becuase atari doesnt make games anymore and no one will pay that much for ancient atari emulated games download code, specialy if like they say its open linux, which means why pay when you can simply download an atari emulator and urun it on their own console? lol

imagine if nintendo was selling nes and snes games on an open OS wich already has emulators made for them why would you buy them anyway?

No Alone In The Dark Remastered no buy. Have they announced anything that isn't running on a 2600 emulator?
as off they showed some old arcade atari games too, but the graphics are like 8bit max since those were old arcade machines, so far not even a 16bit game they showed.

I mean, what can this do that other capable machines can? Play Atari games? People can do that on any number of devices for much less. The whole vagueness of what it can and can't do is just a douche move. Yes, I want to wait and see, but I ain't holding my breath.

Everyone saying it will flop, forgets that nostalgia sells. NES Classic and SNES Classic sold like hot cakes and all they "technically" play is 30 of their generation of games. Sure, they were a little more affordable but the NES Classic didn't have a problem selling at $200 scalping prices either. We obviously don't know what all this will play but they've stated current gen. There are a lot of people that grew up in that era that would love to buy one, if not only for nostalgic purposes. Will they sell as well as other current gen consoles? Most presumable not. But I feel like they'll do ok.

I think people grew up with Nintendo and liked Nintendo quality games with it's superior graphics and gameplay over Atari 2600 games. If this is what Atari has to offer are a bunch of old stick figures games on their VCS than it's gonna flop.

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

yeah how the hell will they open preorders without telling you anything we dont know the list of games it has, we have no idea what the specs are or what they mean by "modern" games, how can you put something up for preorder without exactly telling what you are selling?
They figure if it came from Atari, they can sell anything. Give them a tank with an Atari logo on it and they will sell it like hot cakes.

It looks pretty, and I think that's really what they're going for to differentiate it in the end. Plus, it would seem as though it will natively play PC games (though probably at potato quality) so it has that going for it, too

I'm not expecting it to be much better than a Shield TV, but in my opinion it really doesn't have to be

I'd personally rather get a shield TV, at least I know what to expect.

Is Atari still trying to be relevant with garbage prices? I can emulate Atari games on a Sega Dreamcast and any other system after it. Hell, even a cheap android-based phone/tablet can emulate with ease thanks to RetroArch. Obviously, this console is not for me.:shit:

Why can't Sega come out with another console? Glad to see Atari is still trying to be relevant even though they haven't had a system with new games since the Jaguar. I just hope the "modern games" are going to be unique and not just random ports .
Probably because SEGA is involved in all sorts of deals and agreements with console manufacturers and first party developers, and creating a console in the middle of it all would betray the trust of said manufacturers.

As much as I'd love a Dreamcast 2 or some sort of successor, I don't think it'd be very financially viable thing for SEGA to doat this point in time.

Atari doesn't seem to have that problem as much, so they can get away with releasing a new console. I could be wrong but I haven't seen that many releases from Atari in recent years.

There will be some modern games on the console, though. While there haven't been any names released, I'm willing to bet that it includes mainly cross-platform games like Fortnite.

Hey, blind skepticism is an excellent way to make yourself look intelligent without forming any substantial opinions of your own. Didn't you get the memo?

Finally someone with common sense :O

All the people talking about how the VCS will be at least as powerfull as a switch because it doesn't need to be portable, and that PS4 power can easily be achieved with cheap PC parts under $200, etc... Fail to realize these basic facts ...

Then you didn't grow up with Atari. That's all I'm saying. Nintendo graphics were superior to Atari sure, but Atari's graphics were superior for their time. With that mindset, the Nintendo classics shouldn't sell because PS4 and XBox One's graphics are superior.

Not to mention, the Atari Flashback consoles by AT Games (which are garbage) sell quite well for what they are.

If it were using one of these, it wouldn't be $200, it'd be more like $600+. Intel+AMD priced these things super high, Intel's new NUC that has one is selling for $800, not including RAM or a HDD. So it's most definitely an AMD APU of some kind.

Oh yes definitely it is not the exact same one but since we are talking about a 2019 release it could be a lower end one on the same line that has yet to be released. Although a classic amd apu is the most probable one.

In a previous interview, Atari VCS creator and general manager Feargal Mac said that the console "is an open system, and while our user interface will be easy to use, people will also be free to access and customize the underlying OS." So it'll probably run a customized version of Android OS.
My understanding from this quote is that we can expect an actual Linux customized distribution, not Android.

In any case, it should be able to run RetroArch and allow to watch videos at a decent quality, so, it has its spot reserved under my TV.

A new console with a joystick that is supposed to be hold in your hands? That's for some reason really charming.
I doub it will be the successful begining of a 4th competitor in the traditional console market (Sony, MS, Nintendo beeing the other three of course).
These almost neon red combined with that dark black looks really cool. Wonder if that looks only on this render that way and they go with there traditional red or if it really will look like that.
I don't buy it, but I wish them good luck.
