hello. i DLed some skins from ndsthemes.com and have been unzipping them and copying the bitmaps and theme.ini to /_system_/themes/themeXX but hitting select 13+ times at the r4 main menu fails to change the skin.

transferring roms and mp3s has been fine and moonshell runs without problems and i can also play games without any issues. i've tried fat16 and fat32 and also tried nuking the /_system_/themes directory and copying skin files to /_system_, no dice. i can display the bitmaps with moonshell and they all look kosher [256x192 24-bit bmp]. the r4 is running kernel 1.10.

i'm a linux user running fedora 7 and no one else seems to be having this problem so i'm guessing it's some linux-centric problem. anyone else run into the same issue?

R4 Kernel 1.10 should come with its own themes from the official website.

So my first question is, do the themes and select button work before you changed and added new themes?

nope, i can't switch skins with the default set either. it boots to this:

ds.jpg

and it stays on this skin no matter how many times i hit select. it looks like the r4 isn't aware that any skins exist??

i just tried renaming dirs/files to all uppercase as recommended on this thread but still no luck..

I'm unaware of why Linux may interfere with the update of files to your R4 but stranger things have happened.

Maybe opening files in Linux changes the file properties so that the image files don't get recognised.

For example, when an image is looked at your directory will create a thumbs.db file.

I'm unsure of what Linux does.

I'm a bit stumped really.

the select button is fine otherwise. i can use it to switch between browsing files, games, ebooks, savefiles after entering the games menu. oh well, i didn't buy the r4 for browsing skins so the ugly default isn't a big deal.

I'm stuck the same way. If I overwrite the bitmaps in any of the theme directories, I get the same "default R4" startup skin as pictured above. All bitmaps are the correct size, and work on one of my friends' DSL without error.

I am running both Ubuntu 7.04 and WinXP at home, and have tried adding the same skins in both OSes to my TF card without luck. Maybe this is a bug in the 1.10 firmware or something?

did you check the images name? are they correct? and also check that the images are in the correct format. Also check to see that you have you need to have 12 folders in the themes folder, and they should be theme01-theme12. Put each different theme in different folders.

You don't need all 12 themes, i only have 4 and it works.

Have all 12, and the files are named as following in each "themexx" folder (with xx being 01 thru 12):

bckgrd_1.bmp
bckgrd_2.bmp
icons.bmp
logo.bmp
theme.ini

All images are also 24-bit BMP files, and set to the proper size of 256x192 pixels. In case it matters I am running an R4DS with a 2GB Kingston (JPN) TF card, formatted as FAT32 instead of FAT16.

I should add in my case I can flip themes, but only the ones I haven't touched from the 1.10 release. When I flip to any of the replaced themes, it simply says "themeXX press A for manual" or something like that (with XX being the theme number), but the images stay the same as the previously "working" theme. After a hard/soft reset, it displays the same graphics as shown earlier in this thread (must be a debug theme included within the kernel).

8) Switch of the Skins

If the skin does not exist in the directory of _system_ in TF/microSD, it automatically uses the Skin from formal Beta Edition;

There are 4 pictures at the directory "system/_system": logo.bmp ? icons.bmp ? bckgrd_1.bm and bckgrd_2.bmp. They are the background of the R4 operation interface; they can be changed to fit your style.

logo.bmp - Background of the Top Screen of R 4' s startup.
icons.bmp -- Background of the Bottom Screen of R 4' s Startup.
bckgrd_1.bmp -- Background of the Top Screen of R 4' s Explorer.
bckgrd_2.bmp -- Background of the Bottom Screen of R 4' s Explorer.

Note:
Do not change the picture's name;
Make sure the picture is .bmp format, 8-bit/24-bit;
Make sure the picture is 253*192 pixels.

After finishing process on the pictures, copy the "_system" folder to the root directory of the CF card.

If the Skin exists in the directory of _system_ in TF/microSD, it automatically enters multi Skins mode.

The Skins in multi Skins mode can be switched manually and automatically, it is automatically switched with the Skins by months.

The method of the Skin switch is: Click “SELECT” key in main menu, it switches between twelve manual modes and one auto mode, the chart is showed as below (It automatically skips if the Skin does not exist in the directory of themes):

If the users would like the switches of multi Skins while playing, they only need create the directory of themes in the directory of _system_.

For the method of adding more Skins, please view “DIY Manual of R4DS Skins“
