Thanks for the quick replies, I'll update if I can get it running.

My external hard drive is Western Digital My Passport 320g, and it works pretty well with my Wii since I've had it.

EDIT: Noticed my HDD is NTFS and not FAT/FAT32, does that change anything?

EDIT 2: Just tried using a FAT32 8gig USB stick. Works flawlessly. I guess the question now is there a way to make it read NTFS?

Huge thanks to everyone who answered, I have a few new ones before I receive my Wii tomorrow:

When downloading game torrents, does region code still matter if your Wii is modded? Will both NTSC and PAL games work on my console equally well?

Also, I looked at the instructions for loading games off of an external HD - am I correct in assuming that the hard drive needs to reformatted in the process? For some reason I got this feeling.

that would have been my next question...is your hard drive FAT32...i assumed it was because you said you launched the boot.dol from the HDD.. I dont think that emulator supports NTFS

To proceed or not to proceed: Are you pirating? Or are you downloading a backup?

Nope. If your Wii game is scratched you can download again, burn to another DVD-R, and have fun.

wrong. copyright laws only allow you to rip games you currently own and do not allow downloading titles you may already own off the internet or other sources.

however just because it's illegal doesn't mean it's wrong.

Get IOS stubs with NUSD for windows. Choose all IOS2XX's.

I'm on a mac currently, so I can't use any Window programs

Decided to call NoA to see if they're repair it even if it's modded, looks like there's a policy change since they said no outright.

I wonder if I downgrade to 3.4 then do a regular system update, would it just scan and delete all the modifications that way. I'm worried about a brick though.

OUCH.
I guess once you've tried to hide it well enough you could send it and see if they can tell. I guess it's good they just won't repair it instead of repairing it without asking and then saying that because your warranty is void the repair wasn't free and you have to pay for the repairs to get it back.
Anyway, it depends on your hardware version. If you originally had 3.4 then I would guess it's alright but newer Wiis will simply not work on older software. Downgrading would be
an instant brick in that case. By all means 4.3 replaced ALL of the IOS's so just reinstalling that would get rid of any old or patched IOS as long as you don't have DarkCORP or cIOSCORP or something similar.
The problem is that there's more to it than just the IOS's and the system menu. If you have any channels like forwarders or other things that you personally installed with a WAD, those would stick around with any upgrade or downgrade. Those you would need to remove with any title deleter to make sure the ticket's gone, too. Just removing them with the system menu leaves behind the ticket. (The idea is that way if you delete a game you bought you can still download it again for free.)

Edit :
Important points that shouldn't be there nor any or their tickets for them to realize it's been hacked:
BootMii (as Boot2 or an IOS, either one)
Priiloader (with it's config files and the extra copy it makes of the system menu app)
HBC (the old or new version, they have different channel ID's)
DVDX
Custom channels (any channel you personally installed with a WAD or a homebrew app)
cIOS's (only leave stubs above 200).

-If you don't have a Korean Wii, don't have the Korean IOS's.
-If you installed DarkCORP or cIOSCORP, those IOS's have their versions maxed out and will not be "downgraded" by a system update. You will have to replace them manually.
-If you had previously removed any channels with the system menu you might have to reinstall them so AnyTitleDeleter can see them and get rid of the ticket. I'm not sure about that one.
-Since you're on a Mac, on the wii itself you can use DOP-Mii, WiiMod, or MMM (Multi Mod Manager) to download and install IOS's. They all use AHBPROT so you won't have to have a patched IOS and you can still use them once you've installed the clean ones and removed the cIOS's above 200. WiiMod and MMM also have a WAD manager incorporated if you already have any of the clean IOS as WAD's and WiiMod, in particular, also had a AnyTitleManager incorporated (in the advanced menu option).
-Before touching IOS's make sure you have 4.3 installed (the "newest" IOS's for older system menus are stubs so that combined with an older system menu will be a brick) Then just make sure that under 200 you don't do more than install the latest IOS (even if it is a stub). Don't delete anything below 200 (Except the Korean IOS's if you have them) and don't install anything older than the newest and you should have no danger of bricking.
-Use the AnyTitleManager to remove IOS's above 200. I'm not sure, but I think they have tickets too.

are there any I should save for last?
As far as last, if you happen to have BootMii as Boot2, it would be good to leave that for last just in case and make a backup before you start.

Edit : and if you pull this off and Nintendo actually fixes your console, let us know. Drop me a PM or something. It would be cool to make a uninstallation guide or something.

Just to correct myself, they said even if I offered to pay the $75 (My warranty has far past expired), they'd still refuse to do it. I might call again, and re-frame the question to see if I can move my Wii Shop account and saved data to another Wii (Did an audit, and found I have a whooping $603 worth of VC and WiiWare stuff) Also I've clocked in over 3000 hours in games. Although at least if I send a money order with the Wii, they're legally required to send both the money order and Wii back to me and can't hold onto it.

With down grading,mMy Wii was 3.0 or 3.1, so I got plenty of leeway in terms of downgrading, but as you can see, the stakes are pretty high in terms of money and time invested, so I'm going to not make a move unless I'm 100% sure it won't make things worse. (Or at least not the point it causes my system to brick)

Edit: The only other concern I have, in terms of Nintendo figuring out my Wii was modded is I've had a few channels WADs uploaded, so they'll show up in the game play history and I haven't fully deleted them from the system. Worst of all I forgotten what some of them were so I don't know the correct ID number to delete. Leaves me in a bind if they thoroughly check the system rather than the obvious stuff.

I'm still reading through and digesting what to do. Maybe I'll just send it to a third party since it's the drive that needs to be replaced. But I'll make a list of what I have and don't have to work with at the very least.

If your warranty's past expired anyway I'd say the third party's the best way to go. As far as saving your VC collection, WiiMod in the AnyTitleManager (in the advanced section) has the ability to extract installed channels as WAD's that you could then install on another wii. You'd just have to copy them from the SD card in the system menu before extracting. Also, all your game saves you could get backed up with SaveGame Manager

Another option (One I'd be scared to try myself) is to use Giantpune's NAND tools to create a clean NAND backup to install with BootMii since I'm guessing by you're original system menu version you'd have BootMii as Boot2. Besides my fear that this would also overwrite Boot2 (and therefore bootMii) and you wouldn't be able to recover if it went wrong, this link is to a Windows version. I'd assume the sourcecode could be ported to Mac but I've never actually looked for it anyway.

I'm not going to try anything with risks. Also with anytitlemanager, would the Nintendo shop server recognize that new Wii the channel's been moved to as the owner and you can redownload it as you please, or is the channel that's moved just a pirated version where you need to a WAD manager to work with.

I'm on top of the save games though, I use it to back up save files that can't be moved.

Edit: I'm looking at third party dealers to get my disk reader fixed, but I'd still like to get my homebrew in order since it's such a mess.

Or at least remove the 'Wak' from the System version. I REALLY hate that.
