I actually think this is a fair review. As with the battery life part, a lot of people says they are going to plug in the charger. Which is fine, but for people on the bus/airplane/walking where charger is not an option, this can become an issue.

Overall I don't get why people are ranting on about this, I certainly think it is a neutral review (not fanboy in either direction).
The thing is, are you gonna walk and play the system for 3-5 hours? Buses and airplanes nowadays have outlets in them to plug in electronics, so those are out of the question.

Sure, it may be fair, but it seems a bit too harsh on some of the negative aspects.

I gotta agree, there arent many occassions where i can say i was stuck somewhere and literally played a console until the battery was dead. (And i didnt either have the ability to charge it, or no other form of entertainment)

Either way, im still probally gonna end up buying that Nyko battery pack.

It's funny how 3DS fanboys react if someone says something bad about the 3DS.
It's funny how that not the case, the reaction is from over exaggeration of say bad things.

Like how just because of the battery alone the score got mess up.

The problem with the battery life is that it is LESS THAN that of the DSi or the DSL. Next gen product typically means added features and equivalent or BETTER battery life. The DS Lite has been out a good solid four years now. It is assumed that any increase in processing speed will be met with an equal increase in power management and battery life. Nintendo forgot that they did so well with the 15 hours of playtime you get out of the DS Lite. having 1/5-1/3 of that 4 years later, is pretty mediocre. It's pretty easy to see why it is such a disappointment to many people. Especially considering the battery life is going to weaken over time. Two years down the road under heavy use and you'd be lucky to get 80% of the original life. It is a portable system after all and battery life is important. Coupled with the relatively high price point and lack of any compelling launch titles, its not such a stretch to see why IGN gave it a 7.5

Battery life on the 3DS is less that it's predecessors. The iPad 2 is showing less battery life than the iPad 1. Even the NGP is being placed under the same category of having a short battery life. Why? Because unlike other improvements in technology, batteries have not improved much nor have jumped to a new form over the past couple of years for public use. Can't blame Nintendo (or other companies) for having demanding devices with short battery life, unless you think they should have only advanced their hardware as much as batteries have advanced.

I dont really know technical specs on current lithium-ion batteries but cant they just increase the mAh to get more use out of it?? Im sure it'll cost more but would it really be that more expensive?

To fit more mAh, they would need to physically make the battery bigger (see nyko power pak+).
To make the battery bigger, they would need to make the console bigger (to fit the battery).
People are already complaining about the size, they would complain more if it was bigger.

*sigh* the grass is always greener.

Why would it have to be bigger? How do some chinese companies sell ds lite batteries or even psp batteries that have a higher mah and increased playing time? They have rechargeable AA that range from 1800mah up to 2600 (maybe more) and their the same size. Im not complaining about the 3ds, i've never had trouble with any of my handhelds and their playing time even on my psp go. A slight increase is something Im sure they could of managed but probably didnt due to costs.

A lot of Chinese electronics blatantly lie about their specs. Why they are continually allowed to do that is unknown, but it has been going on for as long as I can remember.

The battery life IS a concern......it gets 3-5 hours now, with a brand new battery in it, but what about a couple years down the line when the battery's capacity starts to diminish? You'll be complaining that the battery life is only 1-3 hours or less when that battery starts failing. Or you'll be complaining that it seems like you are always having to buy a new battery for the 3DS too often. I can see this actually happening and feel it is a valid concern.

On a DSlite, with it's 15+ hour battery life, you don't notice the degradation of the battery as severely as you will on a 3DS. Getting only 8 hours on a DSlite instead of 15+ is no big deal, but when your 3DS is only getting an hour or 2 instead of its full 5, you will notice, you bet you will. If you let the battery deteriorate as long as you can get away with on the DSlite (like say it's down to only getting about 4 hours of life), in comparison, you'd have only about 15 minutes of battery life on the 3DS if its battery was in the same condition as a wore out one on a DSlite that still gets 4 hours.

My guess is that the inevitable 3DS revision will have a large focus on improved battery life. It will almost have to as I figure that will be the largest complaint about the system. Especially in a couple years when batteries in the 3DS's start to degrade.

The price is fair for what you getting. Plus why are people throwing around launch titles around
like that the only games coming out? How 'bout look outside that.

People keep forgetting it full power is 8 hours.

Battery is alright for what you getting as well.

Of course I want it better, but give it a break... gosh

Another issue is the new slim style. the thinner the better on electronics.

the companies who claim better mah without increacing size are liers it doesnt work

thats why we have things like the power pak + to increase our battery life to 6hrs but it also increases the size

Because of something called energy density (ability to pack fixed amount of energy per volume). Lithium-based battery has a fixed amount of energy density. It is IMPOSSIBLE to increase mAh without increase the size of the battery.

Chinese companies that sells third party battery lied because most consumers are not educated enough to know that higher mAh without size increase or different battery chemistry is impossible.

Viewing angles are also expectedly poor, but then again, Nintendo handhelds have never been renowned for cutting-edge image technology.

'never been renowned for cutting edge image tech'

no they only introduced (properly) the touch screen, dual screen and 3d without glasses screen.

I don't like that you put my name into a thread that has nothing to with me. And yes IGN is gay and IGNorrant but not like me.
You post my name like in every of your post, its not cool man.
You just spam a lot and it kinda haunts me in my sleep.

I guess comparing you to IGN was going too far though, I apologize.
