Wow.. a completely ignorant teacher. This clearly demonstrate problem faced by GNU/Linux in class room.

A teacher (from Austin, TX) came to students and confiscated the Linux Live CDs. Next, she wrote an angry email to HeliOS's project founder, Ken Starks:

After confiscating the disks I called a confrence with the student and that is how I came to discover you and your organization. Mr. Starks, I am sure you strongly believe in what you are doing but I cannot either support your efforts or allow them to happen in my classroom. At this point, I am not sure what you are doing is legal. No software is free and spreading that misconception is harmful. These children look up to adults for guidance and discipline. I will research this as time allows and I want to assure you, if you are doing anything illegal, I will pursue charges as the law allows. Mr. Starks, I along with many others tried Linux during college and I assure you, the claims you make are grossly over-stated and hinge on falsehoods. I admire your attempts in getting computers in the hands of disadvantaged people but putting linux on these machines is holding our kids back.

This is a world where Windows runs on virtually every computer and putting on a carnival show for an operating system is not helping these children at all. I am sure if you contacted Microsoft, they would be more than happy to supply you with copies of an older verison of Windows and that way, your computers would actually be of service to those receiving them

Read on ken's reply: Linux - Stop holding our kids back

Perhaps, some one need to educate the teacher and point out that Linux is being used by governments, private & public corporations, and millions of embedded home appliances are powered by Linux.

This teacher is as stupid as all hell.

Oh wow... Just wow... Teachers like this should be sent back to school for some proper education because they are obviously in no condition to be teaching anyone.

Wow, some idiots out there. What the hell is that, though, about linux being inferior to Windows? Throw Wine on Ubuntu Linux and download the restricted drivers and plugins, and there you go. Security-wise, Linux is vastly superior to Windows. Vastly. Windows is easier to use, sure, but if you have the patience to learn, Linux is THE way to go. Who's with me?

I'm half with you, but I personally would say hang both of them and get Mac. Just my opinion.

The reply to that email is just golden.

My favorite part:

The fact that you seem to believe that Microsoft is the end all and be-all is actually funny in a sad sort of way. Then again, being a good NEA member, you would spout the Union line. Microsoft has pumped tens of millions of dollars into your union. Of course you are going to "recommend" Microsoft Windows". To do otherwise would probably get you reprimanded at the least and fired at the worst. You are only doing what you've been instructed to do.

You've been trained well.

In my humble opinion, I've divided the three OS giants. If you want to play games, go for Windows all the way. It just works most of the time. Want pictures, music, and videos really really fast? Mac is the one for you. Need a good OS to do work, tweak, and plain old mess around with? Linux is the way to go due to its customization capabilities.

And your opinion is completely worthless, unnecessary, and completely off-topic. Let's not turn this into an OS war.

OMFG L00K @ M3!!!!! MY OS IS BETTER THAN YOURZZZZ!!!!! I 4M TR3NDY!!!!!!!

EDIT: And that goes for everyone who just stated their OS opinion whilst I was typing.

Anyways, I hope that meeting gets documented. I want to see exactly what she has to say to him, and what he has to say back.

The ignorance is over-whelming...

Well I don't think flaming is in order. Midna25 gave their opinion, it's up to us to respect that opinion. My opinion is up for criticism, as is Midna25's and everyone else's who posts here. But please, let's not flame.

That teacher went to college... More like printed out a degree off of some website.

How can they not know that there actually exists free software?

The fact that the teachers says she and many of her friends had tried linux in college and yet does not know that it is indeed free makes me think she actually paid for it in the past...which is just...wow...I mean...

I think I'm realizing where the word "dumbfounded" comes from....cause she is really dumb, and everything about her is thus "founded" apon her stupidity. (not a literal interpretation)

PS. "No software is free and spreading that misconception is harmful" made me laugh soooo hard. People are so afraid of anything remotely socialist. Its sad that our society can refuse to see the benefit in providing services freely for it's own peoples.

But hey! lets bail out wall-street and a perpetual failure of a automobile industry to the tune of billions of OUR TAX DOLLARS and let them have NO accountability to the american public...uggh...I can't come on the temp without being political anymore...I'm annoyed too...believe me.
