Yep, I'm not surprised but it's funny that they she bothered to write to him! When I was 'removed' from school for a few days and my account suspended, one of the claims was that I had been using 'illegal' software... You guessed it, Knoppix Live CD... (Although I was using it to obtain the SAM + SYSTEM files)

It's understandable that schools wouldn't want their systems being modified, or running unsolicited software, but a live boot disc is completely harmless and doesn't make any changes to a system.
It could bypass all intended limitations put in place though.

Simple solution: If you don't want other OSs running on your systems, BLOCK THEM IN THE BOOTING PROCESS, my old college did this!

Just, not understanding what freeware is, let alone telling the creator that he can't distribute his own work freely, yikes...

I pity tax dollars going to stupid teachers like this. Unless it's a private school. I doubt a private school would hire someone this dumb though (although I had some dumb teachers at my old private school). No wonder the US has such a bad rep in education.

Read the article again. The teacher wasn't angry at the students putting unauthorized software on the PC's. She was just angry that they were "breaking the law" by using "fake free software".

The student did get his Linux disks back after the class. The lad was being disruptive, but that wasn't mentioned. Neither was the obvious fact that when she saw a gaggle of giggling 8th grade boys gathered around a laptop, the last thing she expected to see on that screen was a spinning cube.

She didn't know what was on those disks he was handing out. It could have been porn, viral .exe's...any number of things for all she knew. When she heard that an adult had given him some of the disks to hand out, her spidey-senses started tingling. Coupled with the fact that she truly was ignorant of honest-to-goodness Free Software, and you have some fairly impressive conclusion-jumping.

What if your future workplace uses Linux or Mac instead of crappy systems Windows?

The only 2 reasons, Windows is so successful is because its shoved down everyones throats - most PCs are bundled with Windows.
Only Apple made computers are bundled with Mac
And Linux is bundled with a few computers, if that.

Also most applications are written for Windows (due to the above >_>)

I think this woman got the raw end of the deal. If I was a teacher and saw some grade 8 boys fucking around with a computer i would probably assume the worst too.

Doesnt any of you have a mother or grandmother that isnt computer savvy? I know lots of women that can barely surf the net or check their email and I dont think she deserved all she got for trying to do her job.

Her main mistake was getting all high and mighty and accusing him *before* she researched.
