The Nintendo Switch eShop is shutting down in China

tencent.png

The Nintendo Switch is at the end of its lifecycle, but especially so in China. After what will have been six years of service, the Nintendo Switch eShop will be shutting down permanently in China, including all network services. Starting on March 31, 2026, you won't be able to buy any games on the Chinese eShop, then on May 15th, the removal of the ability to redeem game codes or purchase DLC will occur. Online play will also end on the same date, with network services shutting down for good. To make up for the shuttering of the eShop, Nintendo of China will be giving Switch users four free select first-party games, to be redeemed through WeChat.

The snake eating it's tail. The more companies restrict access to purchased digital content, the more owners find unethical means to preserve personal content. Really shows just how unethical digital content is for end users looking to capitalize on their supposed digital ownership for future personal use.

I've read elsewhere that the Chinese eShop is barely used because the government is super restrictive about which specific games are allowed to be purchased there. A whole lot of Chinese Switch owners just use a VPN to access Japan or South Korea's eShop instead.

More of a reason to keep physical content in place. DLC is one of these things that sadly becomes lost media after the main source shuts it down. Companies should be required to keep this content open and free if they choose to no longer support it.

Nintendo really love to encourage piracy
Given what I've been reading on the scenario, pretty sure this is more on Tencent/Chinese service providers than Nintendo (especially since China's been cracking down on video game addictions for a while now, to the point of reportedly limiting children to 3 hours per week at most). Afaik, Chinese Switch systems (a.k.a. "Tencent Nintendo Switch") are handled differently compared to the rest of the world (to the point that the Chinese eShop library is way smaller), so it's highly unlikely that this will have any far-reaching effects on us. So just more of China being China, and they'll likely have their typical CCP-approved bootlegs ready to go by the time the Chinese eShop shuts down.

Most people who care about gaming in China are alraedy using their cellphones and computers for that purpose. Regardless of whether CCP changes their mind, the cultural impact was made long ago, traditional consoles aren't really suited to the market these days.

That's awful! How people feeling about Nintendo company will end service for all Nintendo Switch owners around the world? I feel strong about a lot of people will get angry. Same apply to Wii, Wii U, DSi, 3DS family before.

It's give me heart attack about The Nintendo Switch eShop is shutting down in USA, Europe, Australia, etc all over the world come to end after Nintendo Switch 2 come out. I sure a lot of people will get angry to throw many hate messages / comments toward Nintendo company to get huge negative on way. Burn a lot of money to burn then all are going end up to e-recycle. How sad news! :(:(

Very sad about many people are spent a lot of money on Nintendo Switch hardware and games are going to RIP!

RIP Nintendo Switch! :hateit::hateit::hateit:

wewillscrewyoutendo not even waiting for the next device out now to shut down their shitty services! :rofl2:

I'm just here patiently waiting for the inevitable @Bladexdsl rant about how terrible Nintendo are
Yoooooo your prediction came predictably true!!, predictably.

onto more serious discussion....
Well thr console isn't even retired and they're shutting it off ohh and heres more shit you dont want as a merry go fuck yourself aka apology.

Tell you what, explain one thing nintendo, that's actually good for customers.

Don't give us the same shit excuse of innovation or first party shite, that song has been boring for 30 years now.
hey dumbass, you do realize they did this exact same thing to Russia when their war started, does that mean they're going to shut it down world wide on the launch of the Switch 2 instead of keeping it on for a fuckoff amount of years like they have with the past three consoles that had digital storefronts (and DON'T point to the other big two becuase Sony was bullied into keeping the Vita and PS3 stores up and they're practically degrading as time goes on while they were freely shutting down game servers like LBP and Microsoft only really kept the 360 Store up in due part because one of the people assigned to hype up the Xbone when it was revealed fucked them by telling people to buy 360s if they didn't like the always online requirement alongside how badly it sold for it's life and it'll be awhile for the Xbone's store to shutdown due is using the more or less the same software as the Series X.)

You want something Nintendo that's actually good? how about the fact it gives you something to complain about to ignore how bad people's quality of life has been declining across the board.

It would be interesting to see sales numbers for China. Import games and consoles are very popular here, it's well known withing gaming circles that the mainland tencent hardware is to be avoided but I have no idea if that makes a sizable impact of the sales of domestic hard/software. Even the consoles sold in Hong Kong don't have the tencent ties and they've been available longer.
