The PlayStation Portal is getting cloud streaming support soon

streamythingy.png

Sony's remote play device will be getting cloud play support soon, following the announcement of a new beta release of the Portal's system software. If you're subscribed to PlayStation Plus's Premium tier and have a PS Portal, you'll be able to trial out game streaming on the device, allowing you to play a catalog of PS5 games off of PlayStation's servers. There are some specific limits for the beta period, as streaming PS4 games is unsupported for now, and a handful of other features won't work.

  • Stream select PS5 games in the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog
    • Over 120 PS5 games from the PS Plus Game Catalog, including Dave the Diver, Ghost of Tsushima, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Monster Hunter Rise, and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, will be accessible on PS Portal via cloud streaming*
  • Streaming up to 1080p/60fps**
  • DualSense wireless controller features, including haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, speakers, touchpad (emulated on the touch screen for PS Portal), and motion sensor***
  • PlayStation Plus Cloud storage
    • Save data and game progress can be stored up to 100GB and will be automatically synced with your PS5 console, making it easy to switch seamlessly between local and streaming gameplay, and between multiple devices.

Someone please make a fan server so we don't need Play Station Plus & we can play online for free. I really wish Sony would just do another handheld that doesn't require being tethered to the Internet

wait...this is a joke right...right? this thing could seriously only stream directly from your ps5 and didn't support sony's cloud gaming stuff? I guess that thing was worse then I thought at least at launch

Sadly adding game streaming to the Portal is all the reason SONY would need to never create a traditional portable. Think about it from their POV

- no piracy
- no proprietary game cards or memory cards
- no end users bitching about lack of storage space
- longer battery life
- no need for a high end custom chip
- keep people hooked on subscriptions

As much as I hate it (and I'm all about physical media), I can see SONY saying "fuck it" and go all in on Portal as their portable.
Until it stops making them money. Then they'll ding-dong-ditch it like they did with PSVR and the Vita.

And just wait until they say they're shutting off the servers. User complaints will skyrocket like they did when they threatened to shut off the Vita and PS3 storefronts (despite the latter being pretty much unusable these days). But this time Sony will just laugh and demand people buy the next version of a thing they already have. Much like Apple, tbh...

Plus its not like there's much of anything on modern Sony hardware that's worth playing. :rofl2:

Even the switch has streaming capabilities. Made me wonder why the portal was so trash when it launched. No wait, Sony expects us all to have PS5s and a few spares

Or just emulate the windows app which can already do it.

Or use a handheld gaming pc that runs windows.

No need for a device to stream console games, rather have a device solely for its own handheld games.

But idiots keep funding digital shit, so obviously consoles will end physical gaming and end up digital only because its them who profit off it.

You, get fuck all.

The psvr has loads of content but it was inferior to competition, the psvr 2 is somewhat better, but could be better.

The vita was a massive shame, it had potential and interest off third parties, but sony didn't bother supporting it.

As for servers, its highly unlikely they'll pull the plug as its all in one, psn, its an android app which users use, it wouldn't make sense to ditch it fully, as with remote play on ps5 is still a feature for vita users, its not been ditched.

Unlike Nintendo and Microsoft, Sony don't ditch its old console just because its launched a new one, they at least keep it running until its showing lack of demand.

Still a useless device. It's a shame the hardware internally was used for such a lame concept. Look, playing games in bed or in another part of the house maybe... fine, but at that rate, why not just buy a proper handheld console then, instead of wasting money on what's effectively paperweight, trapped in streaming hell? A PlayStation Portable or a PlayStation Vita has more value (not financially, I'm talking appreciation and fun) to work with.

If you are going to buy a PlayStation 5, then sit your ass down, pick up a controller and play it as-is, stop compensating with garbage streaming / cloud solutions, get a real handheld console if you want one so bad. Hell, the controllers are wireless now, you mean to tell me you can't use one of those while laying in bed, sitting on the couch, or even a comfy chair looking at the big screen, or even your own computer monitor?

I use PS5 Remote Play quite a bit because my gf likes to hog the main 4K TV. My PS4 is in the spare room with the 1080p TV which works pretty well through a wired connection and getting 900Mbps on the PS5 helps. I also have a GameSir G8 which i stream PS5 to either my iPhone 15 Plus or Samsung Galaxy S22 Plus.

The PSPlus app on Windows lets you stream PS4 titles and it works pretty well. The PS Portal is just an android device so hopefully we can get this functionality on all Android devices kind of like when the android PS Remote play was only for Sony android phones.
