this work of yours is wonderful, it encouraged me to also do this work, but translating it into Portuguese (PT_BR), where the difficulty doubles considerably. Kkkkk... if you can give me any tips after materials to start the work, since you started and it's well advanced, I'm at your disposal!

Hi Brand!! Thank you very much for all the effort you put in those projects and thank you for translating Ougon no Kizuna, I'm a Wii lover and It's my favourite console along with PS2, since I knew Ougon's existence I have always been so interested in playing It, thanks for all!!

I have not started the work on this game you are translating, but I am happy to know that it is in progress, and for sure I will bring it and other works of yours to my native language. For now, I have only translated these wii games into my language: Klonoa; Zack and Wick; Links Crossbow Training; Just Dance versions 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018; Fortune Street; big brain academy wii game, the wii system menu wii, several wii apps and lastly, I am working on Disaster: Day of Crisis.

I have not started the work on this game you are translating, but I am happy to know that it is in progress, and for sure I will bring it and other works of yours to my native language. For now, I have only translated these wii games into my language: Klonoa; Zack and Wick; Links Crossbow Training; Just Dance versions 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018; Fortune Street; big brain academy wii game, the wii system menu wii, several wii apps and lastly, I am working on Disaster: Day of Crisis.

I'm not much of a Discord user, and I think my answer could help other people anyway, so I'd rather do it here.

Your question is actually a bit tricky, since Wii games can have various file formats, some of which I don't know much, but these are the softwares that will be mandatory to you:
  • Any hex editor (I personally like MadEdit Mod - https://github.com/LiMinggang/madedit-mod -, because you can easily switch from SHIFT-JIS to UTF-16BE, but FlexHEX - http://www.flexhex.com/- has a very useful comparison feature) : this will help you search for the dialogs in any type of file (usually ".bin", but it's not necessarily true),
  • BrawlCrate (https://github.com/soopercool101/BrawlCrate) : a fork of BrawlBox which opened more files than the original software for me. Very useful to look for graphical resources or brlyt in ".arc", and ".brres",
  • To modify Nintendo "brfnt" fonts, use Nintyfont -https://github.com/hadashisora/NintyFont-, I used to use BRFNTify, but you have to compile it yourself, and somehow it "degrades" the font quality (something that happened to me in my previous projects... not very noticeable unless your font is small...)
  • For "brfna" fonts, you'll have to find NW4R fontcvtr by yourself : it's part of the Nintendo SDK that leaked a few years ago, and it will help you convert them to brfnt (and vice versa),
  • You might encounter compressed version of files (Takt of Magic and Reginleiv both had, for example) : try using wwcxtool -https://repo.mariocube.com/Wii/PC Applications/WAD Tools/- to open them,
  • Finally, there's benzin - shared link-, a software to convert brlyt to xmlyt, which you will be able to open in an hex editor : these files contain information about layers (for example, position and length of a text menu, etc.), and can also have text in them, in which case they'll be in Hex string (for example "00480065006c006c006f" for "Hello") : use this website https://dencode.com/string/hex to convert them easily.
This should cover it, at least for now : hope you won't stumble on any unknown file in Samurai Warriors. Feel free to open a thread here, I'm sure everybody will be glad to follow your progress, and give you some occasional advice!

Reviewing here your translation files for the Earth Seeker English game, with respect to the text files, the etcmessage.ffx, ffxfile.pac, gamemessage00.ffx and sysmessage.ffx files, did you use some programming language to do the extraction (dumpar) of a . txt file, with the texts and pointers already organized, and after the translation do the redump in the file of the same extension, to make it easier, or you just used the hexadecimal editor to do the direct typing in the translations. I say this because I found the hints of this game very complicated... if you can guide me in this direction I would be grateful, because if you give me, I will translate this game into Portuguese, since you have already gone through these difficulties and won and your patch is ready, it would be easier.

Please leave your questions about my different projects in the corresponding threads to retain the clarity of this one : I'll be notified if you leave a message at https://gbatemp.net/threads/riivolution-patch-earth-seeker-english-translation-for-wii-100.555772/ , so you don't have to worry.

But to answer this one, I used my Hex editor and identified the hex values that preceeded texts and dialogs : it should be easier for you now that they are all in English, but I still recommend you learn the corresponding action of each value (for example, 40 6E - or "@n" - means line break for quests descriptions).

I am not aware of any software that was developed to automatize the process, and creating one would be much above my expertise. :)

My impressions again:

  • I like the character / enemy designs. It seems they take that typical Japanese style but they have some Western influence. It's not something that is seen too often. The character models seem pretty good, definitely Wii era. There could be more animations however.
  • When I hear these clips I do enjoy the music that plays. I hope the soundtrack will continue to impress me.
  • Curious how much of the game is done with 3D models. Certainly some screens is an image + a character model on top. Gives off an old Final Fantasy vibe. I'm ok with this as long as it is consistent (looking at you Arc Rise Fantasia!).
  • It seems like the cutscenes will be pre-renderered. That isn't surprising given the studio's budget but a bit disappointing
  • The story seems a little generic but something that I think would be interesting to see pan out. I like how the side-quest gives us a bit of information about the characters after the quest is completed. Curious where the bard thing will go.
  • I'm not surprised but still disappointed by the combat. If there was a bit more depth (ala Musou) it could be fun to hack away at mindless monsters
Great work on the translation Brand. Those quest screens look really good too!

The character design and music of the game are going to be its strong suits, for sure : I guess they'll make up for some of the game's weakness, the worst of all being the loading screens right now !

But as I wrote it before, this project is more about seeing a "guilty pleasure" of mine being finally translated than anything else : I just hope people won't mix the game and my translation's quality when they give me a review, should they not appreciate the first... :unsure:

As for the combats, you can use a special attack when you've hit enough enemies, and from what I've gathered so far the attack is different depending on the weapon you use.

Speaking of gathering info, I've translated all the prerendered cutscenes and yes, the story is generic : it's not that the game doesn't have any "twist" or anything, it's more that these are very common Japanese RPG tropes.

There's one thing, though, speaking of tropes : the King's cold attitude matches men's general behavior in the game, and Lian is no exception.

It reminds me of Terranigma, where your hero is not a particularly sympathetic one, until he starts to care a little bit more about others and becomes less arrogant and selfish : in "Ougon", Lian starts off very much as this type of character (to the point of sounding a bit misogynistic, I believe), and I'm relieved to say there's gonna be some evolution along the way.

Anyway, once again, this is not the project that's gonna make me famous for my work, and in a way it might be for the best! See you in a few months or so, for more info about my progress!

It looks wonderful, I really liked the fluidity of the texts. I am looking forward to translating this game into Portuguese. During this time, I translated a Japanese Wii game Soul Eater: Monotone Princess into Portuguese. Another member of gbatemp, llidian, developed a tool in python, to extract texts from a binary file of that game. The texts were in japanese, so I translated them to portuguese, and he translated them to english. It was very nice and easier to do the translation with the tool, because translating using a hex editor takes a long time. Have you also developed an extraction solution?

Today I stumbled on an obstacle that could have very well jeopardized the Riivolution patch.

While doing some tests, both with the console and the new Riivolution feature of Dolphin, I realized some dialogs I had translated had stayed in Japanese.

After a few investigation, I came to the conclusion these dialogs were all stored in files which had weird names in Windows Explorer, as evidenced by the picture below:

After going further into the globality of the files (and there were quite a few), I came to the conclusion these files had their names in Japanese, but weren't displayed correctly (you can find the real names in files that refer to them if your hex editor displays characters in SHIFT-JS.

So I went backward, and opened the "reference files" in ISO-8859 (or "Latin"), which led me to identify the names I could see in the explorer.

I tried to rename the files with their Japanese names, but while Dolphin could display the text, the console couldn't :sad: (incomplete list below)

Then I used a feature from Riivolution which is just MARVELOUS : for your information, you can add a "create" variable in the xml file (which tells Riivolution where the files to replace are on the disc), so that if the software doesn't find the files, it "imports" the ones from the patch on the disc (not physically of course, but while the patch is in use).

That way, I was able to replace the "wrongly displayed" names of the files with "Western" ones, then change the references in the files, and Riivolution would actually understand that, instead of replacing a file by one named the same way, it had to use a different one!

So if any of you ever meets a difficulty like this with Japanese files that show gibberish for their names, this could be a way out!

As for me, I'll be changing the names of the files once and for all, so I can do my tests without worrying about this anymore.

Won't this cause some inconvenience to those who want to change the ISO instead of using the retail disk?

Not 100% sure because I have seen some things retain Japanese file names like that Bonus CD in Kirby Dream Collection that it came with. Proper English names are in the booklet it came with though at least.

Well, I never had to actually use new files before. And I guess if Riivolution "understood" Japanese, I wouldn't have had to do it, since my PAL modded Wii can play the Japanese disc.

But I understand now why these files had such strange names on Windows Explorer, and it's good to know you can find a solution to that problem, should other games have the same name system.

The only downside is that you mustn't forget ONE occurrence of these names in the files that contain the reference, or the dialog will simply not show, or stay in Japanese.
