HALP I bricked my 2DS. I was going to do a system update, since the guide says you can do updates with Luma3DS installed, and the message box showing up every time I started the sytem was bugging me. So I go into system settings, perform an update, and get this crash screen:

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

Old 2DS by the way. I have a crash dump if it is needed

But because this is a brand new account I can't actually post the link

Another one? I really should have counted how many of these we get.
Download the latest release of Luma3DS and extract the boot.firm (and the boot.3dsx -- for updating HB Launcher as well) file on your SD.
https://github.com/LumaTeam/Luma3DS/releases

Don't forget to update the version on CTRNAND as well.

Good luck and have fun!

I'm planning to use the 3DS Hacks Guide to install boot9strap and Luma 3DS. Will this allow me to use a 512GB micro SD card? Or do I need to take additional steps?
The 3DS only supports FAT32 filesystem, not exFAT. When using SDs larger than 32GB you have to manually format them to FAT32. Modern Windows will not do this by default. Use a software like guiformat for this if you're have Windows.

Very large SDs can lead to longer boot times and keep in mind, that the 3DS has a 300 title limit. Home Menu will not show more. → 3DSBank is a workaround.

FAT32? woof! I was indeed expecting to be using exFAT. But no worries, formatting it won't be a problem. I'm clueless regarding 3DS, but surprisingly enough, I work in IT. No worries about the 300 title limit. I got a complete set of ROMS, but after curating only found 194 that I would ever be even remotely interested in.

But just to be clear, I can use a larger card with this modification, yes?

Nintendo states the limit is 32GB -- but this is just because 64GB+ SDs have exFAT mandatory as default.
With or without CFW, a 3DS will accept any size of SD just fine after reformatting to FAT32. Many GBAtemp members have very large SDs in their 3DS.

Wasn't the worst idea not to include exFAT support. It is not really needed (no files >4GB) and as far as I know for each device sold with exFAT support Microsoft gets a bit of money.

300 titles can be reached easily when injecting ROMs into the Virtual Console emulators.

Just sharing my 2 cents, the biggest card I got is 256 GB and I got 180 GB leftover w/ 3DSident showing me as 82 files installed, when booting up it took about 6-8 secs before everything loads on screen.

Slight problem -
Urban Trial Freestyle 2

N3DS with Luma3DS/GM9 - Can Install CIA with no problem, and can run Game with no Problems.......unless you count the Terms/Agreement Nag always popping up after Save Load.

O3DS with GW - Unable to Install with either FBI or Title Manager. Says something about the NCCH. This happens with both the EU or W Versions.

I'm just wondering. I've recently hombrewed my 3DS. I downloaded some 3ds Roms to try in Godmode 9. Rather than convert to cia. Can you not just use the "Install game image"??

Nobody seems to have commented on this (perhaps the option wasn't on old versions of GM9?). I've not tried it I'm reluctant as it comes up with a message about sysnand being locked. Obviously its locked for a reason. Is this safe? I don't want to mess with the system and cause a brick. What happens if the install fails?

It seems a pain to convert from 3ds to CIA and then install. I know the CIA files are smaller... and the 3DS files are for emulators. But I'm surprised there isn't a bit more support for .3ds files (or maybe there is?)

Thanks

PS if anyone is having trouble with 3DS files make sure your memory card isn't faulty and make sure the ROMS are not READ ONLY (sometimes downloaded Roms are read only files which won't work)... then verify (they may not work until you verify sucsessfully).

My advice would be a 128GB. The Roms take a long time to install. Keep more SD Cards if you fill it. 512GB is a lot to lose (AS a New user you'll probably lose things a few times as you mess around and learn).

Bigger memory cards also have slower Boot.

No (afaik). For now is better to convert to .cia and then use FBI to install them, as usual. And .3ds files are only supported by 3DS mode flashcards like Gateway, Stargate or Sky3DS.

Or, if there are a lot of games and you want to install quickly, you can use custom-install method then (.cia only)

OK Thanks.... What actually happens if you use the "Install game title" in GM9?

You've also got me thinking..... I wonder if I can use a 3ds file in a Cart for a DS (Ruining Twighlight++). I doubt it but wouldn't that be handy (I'll give it a try now as I know that won't cause a brick).

Dunno exactly, but I heard that isn't well implemented yet. Perharps could lead to a title.db or ticket.db corruption

That's simply impossible. A DS cart (like R4) and TWLMenu only work on NTR/TWL mode (that is, DS/DSi retrocompatible mode), not on 3DS mode.

Didn't work! Probably because Twilight doesn't emulate the 3DS on a 3DS lol

Hello,

What are some essential files I should backup and have stored in safekeeping?

  • Sysnand
  • ARM9 Bootrom
  • ARM11 Bootrom
just those 3 or are there some unique console keys that i should backup too?

Thanks

You can now hold (Start) + (Select) + (X) on boot to dump the ARM11 bootrom (boot11.bin), the ARM9 bootrom (boot9.bin), and your console unique OTP (OTP.bin) to the /boot9strap/ folder on your SD card (note that this will not have any kind of prompt or message). when you do that, let go after a couple seconds as it halts the boot process. it won't tell you they've been dumped, but look on your sd card afterwards.

there are several files I backup, some of which are from 3ds recovery tool by @Joel16 . the only files that change are some the dbs files change with updating firmwares or when installing things. however, I'm paranoid enough to back them all up.

The bootroms are exactly the same for all 3DS units and include no unique data. (You can probably find them for download if you look hard enough – but they're kind of uncommon since they're not legal to distribute and so easy to dump.)

So the bootrom does not contain any unique keys (or information) to the console? is unique information stored in the sysnand?

Yes. Backing up the full sysnand from one console and writing it back to a different console is a surefire way to brick a system. (The CTRNAND is a different matter.)

The OTP is also unique and I think is stored separately from the NAND, but it has been a very long time since anyone needed to dump the OTP.
