Well, playing a game you hate to write a review on it sounds worse than doing a book report. Worse if you are required to finish the game and ir happens to be long.

I remember trying to finish Kirby Dreamland 3, the game was so easy that even not using the button to summon mini dark matter it became a chore.

And this was a bad game of a character I actually like and at least the sound and art of the game were good enough.

Being a videogame reviewer means playing games you might not only not like but that might be buggy as hell.

So.. do you have the guts? Do you have the stamina? Do you have one of those punching inflatable clown things for when you feel frustrated?

And remember to cushion the floor for when you end throwing things in frustration.

Get yourself a wife/husband/girlfriend/boyfriend/box of tissues. There’s much more enjoyable ways to get stress relief than punching an inflatable clown :P

Except in a review here, you can say things like "this game blows so hard I thought a cackling green witch was going to come out of it and threaten to steal my dog."
Can't do that in a school book report. ;)

True, but you can use critic speak to say the book is just horrible.

Also making videogames reviews includes playing stuff like Barbie Games (they are so bad they usually include a barbie doll so they buy them) Burger places games (Buy a "Big Burger" combo and get an awful game included) and games based on movies. Most of licensed videogames suck to the point a 60% approval rating on a game based on a movie or franquise means the game is actually good if you liked the movie/Tv series whatever.

And then there ia stuff like Online Only Games, that means you have to do a new review every few months due to updates and fixes.

And of course, there is the big question, can making game reviews pay enough in this online age? Enough to justify all those hours playing awful games with just a few gems once in a while?

Sadly the answer is usually "No".

You tend earn more money and waste less time doing stuff like washing cars or cutting someone else grass.

I mean, it's not just about the lucrative opportunities of getting free shit/getting paid. A lot of it is self-improvement and exposure, too. Looking back on reviews I was writing in early 2017, I have really improved myself as a writer thanks to staying dedicated. It's a hobby, too.

That’s very true. Like any skill, practice makes perfect. Whether that’s writing, drawing, craft work, programming or anything else. The more you do it, the better you get at it.

I like it for that reason. Outside of programming, which doesn’t require an awful lot of English language use, I didn’t do a huge amount of long-form writing for many years. At the ripe old age of 44, I felt that my writing and grammar skills were suffering due to that.

Among other things, I want to make sure I brush up for when I have to teach my kids — when they arrive. Writing more often is starting to help that. Slowly but surely it all starts coming back to you.

That’s not going to be an issue for all you whippersnappers still in school, college or recently finished those. But at my age, you need something to focus on. Having been an engineer and now programmer, I haven’t used as much English as school would have had me believe.

Though considering some of the complete nonsense and down right lies school taught us back then, maybe that’s not such a bad thing. I before e, except after c, for instance is bull crap. It should be i before e, except after c, unless it isn’t. I give you seize, weird and caffeine as just a few examples.

Hm, I don't think I'm terrible at writing but I'm unsure if I'd be what people want. I do have a Ps4, Switch, and a gaming PC though..

....
LowEndC died today, from seemingly unknown causes.

A 911 call was placed today form concerned neighbors,
"they had heard a loud yell coming from someone who sounded like they were in the throes of death," says dispatch.

The local pd and the homicide department showed up at the scene shortly after dispatchers received the call.
"He was found splayed on the ground, still kinda in his chair, clumps of hair in his hands, contorted.
A real gruesome scene," says Sheriff John Brown.

His computer was still on, detectives say.
They had found this post open on GBAtemp, on page 1.
Initial reports indicate the resident most likely died from a very painful, albeit very quick death.

It also states LowEndC rapidly gained terminal cancer, aids, and autism all at the same time while his brain boiled and his heart simultaneously imploded, causing him to have an extreme form of seizure and flip back in his chair.

How they gained this info from just an initial report is still under question.

After another look over of the scene by local pd, coroners, and homicide,
detectives finally have a final statement on the c.o.d.,

cause of death: very poor grammar use coming from members of the GBAtemp website wanting to fill a video game review position on the staff team.
"It's like it was the straw that broke the camel's back," Sheriff John Brown commented.

Why this set him off is still being investigated.

GBAtemp has been contacted, and as of this writing, we have gotten no response.

In other news,

Santa Barbara California bans the distribution or sale of plastic drinking straws.
The city has made breaking the plastic straw ban an administrative infraction, meaning those caught disobeying it a second time risk a maximum fine of $1,000 and up to six months in jail.

And now the weather with Ollie-Williams, Ollie?

"ITS COLD!!"

Thanks Ollie.

is this thread still open for pc, and original xbox1 consoles? and what are the requirements for PC tech?
We’re taking applications for all reviewers. We just wanted one or two good people with a PS4. So long as you have a moderately strong PC (it needs to run modern games at about medium, I’d say) you should be fine.

This popped up on the front page again. Is the website okay?
It's fine, the post keeps getting bumped to remind people there's still time to give it a shot with the closing date being the 20th.

Or maybe more like anyone took some of this bait. :creep:

Kinda expected lot more people to be interested in this. But guess time is very closed to them. One of the bad things about being a "Responsible adult" No more fun times. :(

Gbatemp is way more of a serious organization then i realized at first. This is pretty dope that they give you free games.

Per chance would you folks be interested in more of a review aggregator than writer. Instead of writing the review myself i scour the web for already written reviews that i do my due diligence on mind you and post them. Or find a good review that is not written in English and run it threw my assortment of translator software and pay those?

The offer is... appreciated, but we aren't exactly looking to go around taking content from other sites.

If I were a couple years younger, I’d have been all over this. I love games, writing, and have every console except Xbox One.

Now I’m in a new (better) job, married, and seem to only have an hour at most to play games before either the wife or my life wakes up to demand all my time and attention.

Now if it were board game reviews, my circle of friends would be more than willing to make that happen...

Is this why the temp is now flooded daily and constantly with full screen ads? To pay the staff? I 100% against social-forums/communication-boards and members making a profit. Especially when it comes at expensive of it’s members experience!
