Hacking Please stop making stupid YouTube videos

As the title says. Seems half of the videos are either wrong or incomplete. A bunch of others are outdated, because people never bother removing them. I'm tired of seeing dumb issues on github for homebrew that requires kernel access (such as FBI), only to find out the user followed some video to get homebrew working, but didn't install CFW.

At the very least, have some decency and link the damn guide!

Are you kidding us? 3ds.hacks.guide IS the holy grail. Where do you think all those YouTube tutorials derive their information from?

Those videos become outdated and aren't updated to reflect the latest and most relevant hacking techniques and methods. We've had far too many newcomers with their bricked or nonfunctional 3DS systems because they followed old videos.

Because 3ds.hacks.guide is in written format, it is flexible enough to edit corrections when needed and can reach across multiple users of different languages. This is something video tutorials cannot do in an unified manner without serious effort and upkeep by the YouTube uploader.

As was mentioned you are probably not going to change any minds -- most such people making the guides seem to not to be on places like this to even see it, and even when they are they can be driven by dreams of being the next [insert popular channel] and fail to appreciate the nuance, to say nothing of the general limitations of the current video formats* and almost religious zeal some seem to have for the video format in general.

That said there is a better solution. Make better guides and keep them updated (deleting old videos as it becomes necessary), or at least keep methods safe and able to redirect people to current text when not.

*not entirely unrelated but I have seen many requests over the years to make video guides to ROM hacking, as though it will render the process less arcane and more accessible. Despite video and ROM hacking both being long term, front and centre hobbies of mine, ones I can say I have some considerable talent for, I am at a loss for how to do it and make it remotely compelling and useful. Most console hacking techniques tend to be more of a flow chart with premade steps but hey.

Except video guides don't continually improve upon themselves or make corrections when needed. Popular channels like sthetix have not shown that level of attention, which is why the regular members here who help others fix and unbrick their systems do not support them when their problem arise from using those outdated guides in the first place. Those videos covering particular subjects are often posted one time and left alone, and the reason for this is that editing videos require more time, patience, and effort than written guides.

If flashcart kernel timebomb is the worst offensive you can find for outdated info at 3ds.hacks.guide, then I'm glad that the guide is more or less perfect. If you see something wrong, why don't you help out the community by pointing out what you found to those who maintain 3ds.hack.guide, so that they can fix it? The squeaky wheel gets the grease.

I've actually reported issues and wrong statements about the ntrboot part in the past and it was a bad experience. No thanks. On the other hand there is not much development going on when it comes to ntrboot. We kind of are at a place where you can make a guide and it will probably be the way to go for the rest of the 3DS' live.
A few other problems with the guide:
-it lists the R4i-SDHC B9S as the first option in the table while it is one of the worst, maybe the worst option to choose
-The R4i Gold 3DS Deluxe Starter card does NOT support NTRBoot. Only the "blue" card from the deluxe edition which is listed below. That is a R4i Gold 3DS (RTS) card and as such it is known that it has no timebomb
-The guide is unclear about non-RTS r4i gold 3ds cards from r4ids.cn
-They should list the actual website of the flashcart together with the name since a few flashcarts might be confused with each other
-They don't list the stargate (although it's compatible)
-There are other rebrands of r4isdhc.com/r4i-sdhc.com which are compatible with ntrboot
There may be more issues

You might be the only one who has noticed that. In which case you should either submit an issue on the guide's github or make a pull request. That's how these things work. Don't complain if you have no intention of doing anything about it.

As already stated: I did that for a few other issues in the past (but I didn't have a github account back then so I contacted plailect directly) and no thanks.

Yeah, that guide seems to have been getting outdated since Plailect is too busy these days to keep it up to date. It's not a big deal, it's only outdated in minor ways, not in any way that makes it dangerous to use or just overcomplicated, like some YouTube tutorials. Still it would be nice if someone took over keeping it up to date.

I've been trying to commit to working on it for months, but I am taking many classes and have very limited time to work on anything besides school-work these days. I have now added a notice that it is outdated, which should hopefully help people realize that who just stumble upon it.

As for the 3DS guide, this is and will remain my priority as it is by far the most popular of all of the guides. Up until just now, I was not aware of any part of it being outdated (this is the first time these ntrboot issues have been raised to me). I will address these as soon as possible (hopefully today?).

Take your time. Your personal life takes precedent over the guides. If required, do you personally know and trust anyone who is close to both you and the homebrew community to take over upkeeping the guides for the time being? I believe you have valid concerns and prior experience where co-developing and maintaining the sites went awry soooo... If not, putting that Switch portion on notice and redirecting to other more established resources is the best you can do. This isn't suppose to be a contest!

The 3ds.hacks.guide doesn't appear to have any outdated info that warrants serious attention and immediate fixing, except for maybe those TWL_FIRM cias. (I'm elbowing your ribs, lol. It's okay, we got this covered for anyone who presents their broken DSiWare mode on these threads. Yay for System Update and Recovery Mode).

IMO, 3DS custom firmware/hacking developments has slowed down to the point where there's not much to add or fix. If there's anything (believed to be) worth improving, I think would have been brought to your attention. Any complaints, however valid they are, that you're not told about would not be fair to you accepting blame or being criticized for. One cannot fix what they don't know is broken or needs work on!
