Still relatively new to the Wii U scene so go easy on me! On firmware 5.5.2.

I'm attempting to install backups versus using loadiine. (more storage on my USB drive) When I boot the console, the CBHC menu appears so I boot to system menu. The homebrew icon has been replaced with the CBHC icon. So I tap the CBHC icon and it loads Haxchi then brings me back to the CBHC menu. I load Mocha, I'm at the system menu again and have to load the CBHC menu once more to get into homebrew launcher (because the icon has been replaced) and at that point it gives me the "-5" error on a black screen.

I apologize if this sounds confusing. From what I understand, you have to load Mocha so your console won't ask to format your USB drive. Does anybody have an idea of what could be causing this, and why the homebrew icon was replaced? Any help is seriously always appreciated!

I think u have to install hombrew launcher as a channel. And u don’t need mocha. Once cbhc loads up u should be patched and ready to go

Usually first time u start up u have it format hardrive to Wii U format

Then you install games from sd card to hardrive

The hardrive nag is do vwii side
I believe

I bought the console with the SD card already set up, which the owner didn't even know about. But I believe it was installed as a channel. Chbc just replaced the homebrew icon with the "DON'T TOUCH ME" icon.

I thought you had to run mocha from that, so the Wii wouldn't ask to format your USB drive?

I can get to homebrew launcher as soon as I turn the console on from cbhc menu. It's when I run mocha, then go back to cbhc menu (because the homebrew icon was replaced) and try to run homebrew launcher, that's when it gives me the - 5 error. I can get the games to work on my SD card through loadiine just fine. Im just attempting to play through a USB drive instead.

You're confused on a few things. CBHC doesn't replace the homebrew channel it replaces HaxChi (which can be set up to boot HBL). You don't need Mocha if you have CBHC. Just tap the home button when you boot up and see writing on the gamepad screen. This will take you to CBHC menu. Change autoboot to system menu. Now you're in CFW every time you boot. Now you need to find a way to get into HBL. You should be able to tap "don't touch me" and hold B to get there. Or use Browserhax. Once you're in HBL you can use WUP installer to install custom channels (cause you're already in CFW). You can install HBL and WUP installer channels if you'd like.

No need for Mocha unless you're trying to play loadiine games (old outdated method) on your fat32 USB. You can't use fat32 USB to install games using WUP Installer. Loadiine only.

If you're using Mocha only for the reason that it doesn't nag you to format your HD then you can do that just fine without Mocha. Just search the forum for "Nag". But keep this in mind, this is only for a vWii Fat32 drive. You cannot use a fat32 USB drive with the current hacks for Wii U. You MUST format it with the Wii U or you cannot install games to it using WUP Installer method. So yes, you will need two separate HD's. One for vWii and one for Wii U.

Thank you for the detailed information. I'll leave mocha alone. I also have no interest in vWii whatsoever. I had no idea loadiine was an outdated method. So the preferred method is to install to a USB drive or to your system, through an SD card? Ideally, I'd like to play from a USB drive for storage reasons if possible? I apologize for the questions, I'm still trying to understand this the best I can.

Yes that's correct. Loadiine was the first method we used for playing backups. It's slow, outdated and you cannot play online with Loadiine.

Now you can install to a USB external or internal using WUP Installer and Wii U USB Helper. Yes, you download with Wii U USB Helper then move it to SD. Then you use WUP Installer to install it from the SD to either internal or USB. You can choose.

If you need some direction try reading through the noob guide (in the stickies and in my signature).

Ahhhhh. I gotcha! Here I'm thinking it's identical like the Wii where you can play directly from a USB drive. Thanks for the clarification! So if I'm using a little 4gb sd, I'll pretty much only be able to install a game at a time, which is fine, I'd just like to get everything on a USB. I really appreciate the help and I'll give it a shot as soon as I can!

For DS games, I can stick with loadiine? That seems to work pretty well, for me at least. Regardless, thank you!

EDIT: Now that I'm thinking about it, I'll definitely need a bigger sd card.

@Kafluke I've tried installing and it gives an error message stating, "Confirm complete WUP files are in the folder."
That means it can't find the install files. It should look like this

Sd:\install\(any folder name you want)\files

You can't have special characters in your folder name. Get rid of anything in your folder name that isn't a-z only. You can even just call it "game". It doesn't matter. It will show the game name after you install it.

It is recognizing the game, and there are no special characters. I came across a tutorial on usb helper, and I believe I'm using it completely wrong. Is that necessary to do on PC first, before attempting to install through wup installer? If so, that's definitely my issue.

Wii u USB Helper is a PC app. You can't run it on the Wii u. Look at the noob guide
