I noticed a huge amount of spam accounts recently posting in status updates.

What if a CAPTCHA is added for confirmation, before an account is made? this way, newer spam accounts shouldn't be able to be created.

I thought there already was one  I could be wrong, I have had my account since 09, so I don't remember the sign up process very well.
I'm not sure too. I remeber to just make my username and password.

However, if there was a CAPTCHA, how could a bot get through it?

There is still a captcha. I don't really know how it works, though, or how bots get through it. It may be real people being paid to spam the forum with links.

I am pretty sure mine did, but I joined when the site was closed off to guests and made people join to view the site.
A person could have made an account first, then let the bot take over, maybe?

Yeah, I guess that would be the case.
We used to have a pet smartbot we kept to play around with. I wish they weren't banned, then we could ask that bot how they got in.

Oh jeez that would suck! Why would someone get banned and sign up again? And how?

Can't a more advanced bot evaluate the result and just append it to any request? I guess the Captcha would stop the more rudimentary ones, I suppose.
So the Bots post links on here or something?

Usually through proxies or other anonymizing tools, so if their IP is banned, they just reconnect or change their proxy and they're able to come back here. It's not terribly difficult to overcome a ban if you know what you're doing.

Why would someone want to? I mean if they did something THAT bad to be banned, then shouldn't they take a hint that their not welcome here?

Nah, sometimes they want to get the last word in, or they might want to still be able to post and cause trouble in other places down the road. There's probably other reasons as well that I can't think of immediately.

Edit: Also sometimes people don't get the hint that they're not welcome. I've seen that too.

We have custom made anti spam measures and guess what? People create bots just to bypass them for our site specifically. Also a lot of the spammers you see are humans so there is no way to filter them out. Spamming sites is an entire black market industry there are literal offices full of people in third world nations who spam sites for a living. It is pretty much impossible to stop all spam sadly but there are other places that have it a lot worse than we do.
