Oh, well, I also hate to be the guy that always says "we want to release it as soon as possible", I wish I could give more information, but I don't want to give false hopes either. Actually we have no idea how much time will betatest take.

Really, it's no problem! I really wasn't interested in the date, just wondering if you guys had a date in mind (without telling us what that date is)

I'll never understand how knowing a date helps people... I'm fairly certain most of your lives do not revolve around this project. I'd also hate to be the guy that provides a date and then gets called a liar (you all know some dumbass will state that an estimation is a "promise").

Good work though, I'm interested to hear how you got the videos translated without impacting the source.

I wasn't looking for a date, honestly. I was just wondering if they had one.

Umm.. The first sentence contradicts the second.
And you *are* asking for a release date.

As I said before, anyone doing translations hate when people constantly asking for status updates, release dates or beta patches.

Since they don't have any of the original assets to make the work smooth (and loads of problems can pop up in an unforseen way, like more recently the JP save text bug, and tilemaps being used for some graphics which is highly unusual in a PSP game with lots of space), besides the fact they do this on their spare time, they can't fix deadlines like SE does.

The answer you're seeking... They probably do not have it. They would be annoyed if they were constantly asked for giving one, and since they are doing this purely out of enjoyment, and this enjoyment is destroyed by such questions, said questions could actually be detrimental to the project.
Don't believe me? You can ask about Crimson Nocturnal's whereabouts nowadays. That group was destroyed by "asking for release date" mail flood.

FF-0's team has been kind enough to give estimation percentages and update them on a regular basis.
Since the betatesting begun, it means the translation is 100% finished, and they're now in the process of fixing the display bugs (and the videos). You know, so that it doesn't end up with half the text appearing outside the box on dark backgrounds.
It's very close to completion.

If nothing gets awry, you can play it this summer ... if that's an acceptable answer.
Well no, it isn't... all sorts of unexpected stuff happens (see Zwei 2's translation, in betatesting phase since Dec. 2012; or Arabian Nights on the SFC in betatesting since 2004 then only released in 2013). Nobody can predict what could happen for sure. We can only hope for the best however.

I know a better one how about Tales of Phantasia
Time the game came out December 23, 1998
Release 1/9/2012 and still has a sort bug

Talk about a long wait now I know Absolute Zero make one in 2007 but it was not so complete and still 9 years later :D

I trust we do not have to wait as long but I still waited for the above and the game was way smaller and less text for sure so even if this takes another year or 2
I know that it was worth the wait and still done fast in comparison to that :teach:

Okay, I'll rephrase. I'm not asking him to give me a date. I'm wondering if, internally, they have a date they've perhaps discussed that they'd like to meet. I don't want to know what that date is. Apologies if I offended anyone.

Maybe they misunderstood your question (again..). Riku didn't asked the team to give the release date, he's just asking if they have a release date in their minds (without mentioning the date when it would be released, only if they have one), and the only answer for that is just big yes or no. I think that's what he wants to say.

About the video editing, there was a guy commented on Sky's blog and he offers to help in video editing (I don't know if Sky or the team members saw that post..)

Anywhere I can look up the details about the destruction (literally) of crimson nocturnal? I have read a lot about
how deadline annoyances killed the team but never got around investigation how their downfall came to be.

Well, they were too open for the community (even had an interview on Siliconera, further exposing them to a large group of trolls), they used to give deadlines.
Then, shit happened. People started to complain "why don't you do this faster, it shouldn't take much time", "you could..", "give us a deadline", "oh no you didn't keep the deadline where's the translation U suck FU Gimme alpha patch". They were flooded by hate mails screaming self-entitlement and egocentrism, to the point it was simply unbearable.
Then one day the most active DS translation group disbanded and ceased all its activities, and all their ongoing work was dropped.
They left a big hole nobody ever was able to fill.

About the FF Type-0 translation, projected deadlines were given at one single point, that is the main script.
Those deadlines were simply obtained through calculating the time it takes to translate X remaining lines by this week's ratio.
But now there's no such thing as a mathematical formula for the current testing process.

And I think the answer was a big no, since Sky said he doesn't want to give a deadline so that he doesn't give false hopes. Nobody, not even the translation group, knows for sure when it will be done. I have a buddy translating FF VIII (for another language) and he actually wanted to announce it but he found out he missed a huge block of text and a bunch of graphics.

Not meaning to offend you but it's no use asking this particular question.
It doesn't do any good (whenever the team has a conclusive answer they will announce it -doesn't make much sense for them to keep it a secret-, but not before then), but its harmful potential is BIG (it's like a pandora box).
Please understand. Cheers :)

All this talk of dates, I just wanted to mention that some translations that I can think of are intentionally released on a certain date, like Tales of the Tempest, which is generally regarded as a horrible game that no one would bother to translate, being released on April Fool's, or the Megami Tensei translation being held back so the patch release can coincide with the game's anniversary.

Also, I always thought of Crimson Noctural breaking up as the leader ragequitting and burning everything in rage rather than a sad but unavoidable drowning in a flood of hatemail where the entire team died, but I never bothered to read much into the drama, so I maybe I'm wrong.

Edit:Oops, here we go, I think I must have this post read this to get that idea about Crimson Nocturnal.
NeoXephon decided on his own to close his site and operation down without any notice. It came as a surprise to the last 2 active members (Easton West and myself).
The 3 of us had been working very hard to get those patches out, with the majority of work happening between translation and editing (Easton and myself). I got sick in Jan '11 with 2 consecutive colds but managed to finish up my bit. Once I regained my health I joined in editing bugs people found.. then one day I tried to go to the site and found it closed. That's pretty much it, wish I could say more happened, but I was active on the forum and didn't see it coming.

As far as resources go.. I have the script and am now apart of Cain's project, working on Saga 3. We had DarthNemesis join our team recently, so I pitched the idea of resurrecting Saga 2 once we're done with Saga 3... and it may just happen.
Also, that SaGa 3 project by Cain was released last year.

Wow, this thread is really booming now, everytime I check it, there's at least one new page. And glad to see that you solved the quality loss problem for the videos (at least I think you did because it's already 25 % finished xD)
So, about the beta-testing, I wanted to ask you something, out of pure curiosity xD Now that you guys understand the game, do you think it's better than Crisis Core? I love Crisis Core, and I have spent countless hours playing it, but to me,
Type-0 looks like it could even top Crisis Core. Just wanted to know your opinion about it :)

And btw: Lightning Returns is awesome!! :D Everyone waiting for the patch should get it, that way the waiting won't be too hard :)

@SylverReZ, atleast wiimmfii went fine although people only use it for Mario kart Wii

At least if they ban you for cheating, get another Wii. They're cheap as chips.

It got shutdown because somebody "accidentally" leaked the database for the amount of people using the beta.

RiiShop is the laziest way of downloading Wii games. Did somebody not think of this through?
  • BakerMan @ BakerMan:
although i ended up accidentally changing my nand with no way of going back bc i didn't know you needed a gamecube controller to restore it (i have a wii minus/1.1, which doesn't have gamecube controller support)
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
@BakerMan, I think you're talking about the recovery mode that the SaveMii used, and also was to restore softbricked systems.
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
If your NAND was hardbricked, then just buy another Wii. Or go with the dirty NAND flasher method.
  • BakerMan @ BakerMan:
and if i find the sd card i have my NAND backed up on, i can not only restore the NAND if i solder the right part in, but i can also put my NAND on dolphin, then i can play dolphin online, like PMEX Remix or MKWii Riibalanced
  • Xdqwerty @ Xdqwerty:
    Brb
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
@BakerMan, Oh yeah, that was a thing too. Dolphin does support Wiimmfi.
  • BakerMan @ BakerMan:
yeah you just need to put your NAND backup with wiimmfi on it
  • BakerMan @ BakerMan:
ngl i feel like if a bunch of my friends have wiis and know how to get wiimmfi and back up their NAND, then we could do a PMEX Remix tournament
  • BakerMan @ BakerMan:
maybe even add UMVC3/DBFZ and make it a biathlon/triathlon
