Ubisoft: No more Wii U exclusive games until more Wii U's sold

One of the Wii U's biggest supporters, Ubisoft, has stated that they will not produce any more Wii U exclusive games until more consoles are sold. At Present the Zombi U dev simply can not justify development of any exclusives due to the small revenue gained from Wii U exclusives. However games like Watchdogs, Assassins Creed and Just Dance will still make it to the struggling console this fall, so support for the Wii U is not being dropped all together.

of course they can, by the time the ps4 and xbox one get out we will have a list of first party games, and even if that doesn't work they will do the dick move they did with the 3ds when the vita got out, lowering the price

Hmm...so that zombiu sequel is either false or not an exclusive anymore (in the good news: they don't have to go with the title "zombie u2" ).

In their defense: why the hell should they go for a nintendo exclusive? Rabbids land and 'your shape: fitness evolved 2013' probably didn't meet expectations, and I guess zombiu didn't push as many sales as hoped/expected. And with the crap they got following the press on Rayman, they probably remembered we don't care so much for exclusivity.
So yeah...this way, at least we don't get a last minute "sorry, guys: six month delay!".


Doesn't mean I've forgiven them the stunt they pulled just before the Rayman release. I bet those guys already decided this news back then...they just didn't made it public.


But all in all...I don't really care as long as nintendo doesn't get excluded. Odds are they're not going to release another exclusive even if the wiiu becomes the hottest console (not literally) on the planet.

Don't get me wrong, it's fine to stop producing, or limit production on the system until it sells more, I get the business sense there, but why bother announcing it? Where's the business sense there?

I too believe they can turn this around. I do own the system so I truly hope they do. I also don't get the business decision to announce that, really. Sure, one COULD say that people go like: Well in that case I better buy a Wii U now instead of next year or else I won't be able to buy Ubi titles later. But that sounds like wrong logic to me. Why not instead say: If more people buy a Wii U, we can do more exclusives for the system? Same context, better phrasing...

It does help ubisoft though -- if I am an investor it tells me that ubisoft are not run but a bunch of morons that will persist in sinking their resources into unprofitable ventures. Likewise it could count as them calling Nintendo out -- assurances amount to things like nintendo saying "we will not charge for being on our console until you have broken ?? sales". Whether it is wise for them to do it is a matter for debate but historically it has been seen to work and Nintendo could at this very moment be calling them up and offering a better deal.

Before the inevitable backlash - it is not Ubisoft's responsibility to ensure the Wii U is a success. That lies entirely on Nintendo. This is in no way a betrayal. It's just a smart business decision and nothing more.

Anyway, this is a perfectly reasonable, rational, and understandable approach. Games can be huge investments, so drastically limiting your audience from the outset makes less and less sense. Plus, Ubisoft will probably continue to port games to the U; I doubt they're going to abandon the console entirely.

I do not follow -- anybody can buy some shares in Ubisoft whenever an exchange they trade on is open (it how public stock exchanges work after all) which means making a public announcement of their intentions not necessarily a bad thing.
