The US Postal Service announced their plan to stop delivering mail on Saturdays, an effort which could save them 2 billion dollars every year. Say so long to Saturday mail deliveries. As of August, they'll be a thing of the past. The growth of email and other online services has taken quite a toll on the post office. As first class delivery dwindles, the post office has been losing up to 25 million dollars every day.

I foresee other shipping services raising prices due to the fact they deliver on Saturdays.

There is probably a good study in how government entities and a country where a lot of delivery services exist compared to other places where things are slightly different vis a vis postal/delivery services to be done here.

As it stands it has only been grudgingly or for "in no hurry to get there" stuff that has seen me and mine use USPS (which is still quite a bit). I probably should note most of that was engine/vehicle or computer parts and those are frequently of the "I do not care- get it up and running" persuasion.

NO! NO! Gah! I buy/sell so much online, and now I've gotta wait a whole 2 days in a row for shipping?
It's not like USPS is the only delivery company in the world.. Use UPS, DHL or other such companies (they'll even deliver everything in a matter of hours if you pay enough).

Not really a big surprise, it's not really essential for post to be delivered 6 days a week. As Bladexdsl said: Join the rest of the world :P

In some ways I agree jefffisher but Saturdays are still considered weekends and pay probably has to scale accordingly. Equally it would probably have much of the business world up in arms and contracts like "working days" would possibly have to be amended.

That said if someone floated a "pay extra to also have [insert midweek day]" like people already do for rubbish collection (the likes of which is often also a government service) then I would be curious to see the debate that followed.

Re: rest of the world
Speak for yourselves- I still get post on Saturdays. Granted in days of old it might have twice a day during the week and sending post on a Saturday probably will not see it go anywhere until Monday night at the earliest unless I wander down to the sorting office or a post office but it still comes through my door.

Don't know whether to go with, "Oh great - the government's gone postal!" or "This is a pretty lousy red letter day.", so I'll try both.

Also, since a lot of people seemed to miss this, packages will still be delivered on Saturdays, just not regular mail (letters, magazines, etc.). Relax.

What happened to "Rain, sleet, snow or hail, we'll deliver all your mail!?

If you read the source they say they're keeping package delivery and post offices will still be open. So not much is really changing.
