WII U HARDWARE SALES SURPASS WII SALES BY MORE THAN $30 MILLION THROUGH FIRST SIX WEEKS

Jan. 10, 2013
With more than 460,000 units sold in December, Wii U has now sold nearly 890,000 units in the United States after only 41 days on the market, according to the NPD Group. To date, Wii U hardware sales have generated more than $300 million in the U.S. alone; Wii hardware had generated just more than $270 million at the same point in its lifecycle.

"While the Wii launch established new benchmarks in the United States, Wii U has surpassed its predecessor in perhaps the most important category: revenue generation," said Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America's executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. "The demand for the Deluxe SKU, which was essentially sold out at retail this holiday, and the strong attach rate of New Super Mario Bros. U, shows that we have the value and the games to drive momentum in 2013. We look forward to offering great new experiences and bringing smiles to millions of new faces throughout the year."

Nintendo sold more than 2.65 million hardware units in the United States in the month of December. 2012 marked the 11th consecutive year that Nintendo has sold at least 8 million hardware units in the U.S. Other Nintendo sales milestones achieved in December 2012 and beyond that time frame...

So, it's not doing so bad after all ? They must have done a really good job with supply / demand this time around, not too much advertising (allegedly) creating artificial demand....Just a successful launch ;)

they've learned from the mistakes they made with the 3DS
now all they have to do is... GAMES!!!

.... and also, lure in 3rd party developers!
(I want a fucking Final Fantasy that doesn't sucks on a Nintendo console again!)

can't believe it's selling with it's joke of a games list!
NintendoLand. 'Nuff said.

While I don't have a WiiU myself, I have to admit that it's a great console for playing with friends. As for the Deluxe edition selling more, it's just expected. Comparing the basic and deluxe versions show that the deluxe version surpasses the basic version in pretty much every category..

They are not even advertising the thing too much over here, 99% of the people I know ( grown ups I mean ) don't even know what the hell it is.
If they keep it steady like this, with a little more advertising and / or a price cut when sales starts to slow down down the road, I would say the Wii U could even surpass the Wii in terms of hardware sales, and completely obliterate it in software sales ( now that 3rd party can port their multiplatform games on it ;) )

NintendoLand and NSMBU. 'Nuff said.
Fixed. While critics may be right that nintendo just has to pull a game starring Mario out of their ass to generate a conga line of customers, it actually does the trick.

At the article itself...I'm not entirely sure if this is good news. The wiiU is more expensive than the wii was at launch, so it's pretty obvious it'll surpass the revenue generation of the wii. The article also doesn't say anything about "added for inflation" or anything of the actual profit (remember: the wiiU sells at a small loss), so that's up for debate as well.

What I am most interested in, however, is a comparison on sold consoles in those six weeks. How many wiis were sold in the first month?

And why am I still not so crazy about it yet?

it is selling pretty well here too. Considering the prices are high here!!!:

Normal: $6,000P = $466 US
Deluxe: $7,300P = $565 US

Although last time I saw those prices was in December. No one here, unless you're upper middle class, wants to spend that much anytime soon.
I'll wait. I'm still finishing some Wii games. ^_^
