Nintendo continues to dominate in terms of sales, as the Nintendo Switch has hit yet another sales milestone. The latest financial report shows that the Switch family of systems has officially shifted 89.04 million units since the console's launch in March 2017. Last time we checked in on the Q4 2020 fiscal report, the Switch had sold 79.87 million units, which means in a matter of a few months, the Switch was able to surpass the sales figures for the PlayStation Portable, the Game Boy Advance, the Xbox 360, and the PlayStation 3. Despite such success, Switch hardware and software sales are noticeably down from 2020, with the former having decreased 21.7%, and the latter going down by 10.2%.

With the launch of the Nintendo Switch OLED on the horizon, as well as major first-party and exclusive releases set to arrive before the year, Nintendo is keeping its outlook positive. The next milestone for the Switch would be overtaking the Nintendo Wii, which sits at a respectable 101.63 million units sold.

The Switch has only been out for 4 years. PS2 came out in 2000 and was discontinued in 2013. DS came out in 2004 and was discontinued in 2014. For the Switch to reach 89 million in just 4 years is a pretty big achievement.

There is a HUGE difference, of course. The Wii was competing with the DS, which was the best selling handheld of all-time. There were a quarter of a BILLION Wiis and DS's sold combined. The Switch is both the Nintendo handheld of its time as well as the console of its time. Nintendo no longer competes with itself. Having one product to focus on and to develop games for has made it a more compelling platform. But it is still quite an achievement and shows that once again Nintendo can win with previous generation power and graphics.

This sales confirmed there won't be a switch pro. There is no reason to upgrade the hardware when it sells just fine and the margin is even higher

People buy things twice all the time or slightly different versions. These sales figures if anything would help not hinder

In a way it's almost worse seeing a Nintendo console sell so well, because then you know they have no incentive to improve or change anything. At this point I'm starting to believe there won't be official support for themes until after Switch 2 is announced, and if OLED sells well, that probably won't be for another solid five years. For that matter, you'd think 89 million sales would be enough to attract all the major streaming apps by now, but it's still missing a bunch.

I still don't see the point why anyone would need streaming video on the Switch. It doesn't have 3G/4G cellular capabilities. If you are at home you already have a bunch of other devices already more capable of playing streaming content. If you are out and about, WiFi becomes a limitation and... You very likely have a mobile phone on you anyway. Keep the Switch for games. It's not a multimedia tablet nor should it be. Or buy a first gen one, mod it, install Android and never use it as a multimedia tablet device anyway, because you will not.
Those who complain about this never actually intended to use the Switch in this manner. It is just an excuse to raise criticism.

Not surprised at all, the Switch being the huge success that it is, 2 models already with the 3rd on it's way all in the span of 4 years is really impressive, you could say Nintendo hit jackpot here. Looks like the PS2 has a real contender here..
