Gabe Newell has revealed in an interview from the Penny Arcade Report, that if Valve thought it was necessary, they would not hesitate in developing hardware and attempting to compete with companies like Nintendo, Microsoft and Sony. Gabe did, however, make sure to mention that he would prefer Valve to keep working as they are currently are, producing software for platforms that are already developed and manufactured by other companies. The full quote can be seen below:

"Well, if we have to sell hardware we will. We have no reason to believe we’re any good at it, it’s more we think that we need to continue to have innovation and if the only way to get these kind of projects started is by us going and developing and selling the hardware directly then that’s what we’ll do.

It’s definitely not the first thought that crosses our mind; we’d rather hardware people that are good at manufacturing and distributing hardware do that. We think it’s important enough that if that’s what we end up having to do then that’s what we end up having to do."

I think more competition would be healthy for the industry. The PS3 and the 360 are almost the same damn thing save for a handfull of decent exclusives for each, and the Wii...well...No one I know even plays their Wii anymore.

A Valve console would actually be pretty cool.
Cross-platform play in any multiplayer game for console and PC?
Check.

The Wii is very dead right now. It's just trying to coast on the last few sales of it's lifetime until the Wii U hits.

I wouldn't rule them out immediately, but I have some doubts. What involvement has Value had with hardware that wasn't maintained by a separate company? Their current distribution structure relies on hardware/software by companies who, if they were to go the route of hardware, would be direct competitors with them, which might affect their service on the existing platforms.

What's wrong with Foxconn? Other then inhuman a'la slave driving labour of course. They deal in console parts, mostly.

Also, Dreamcast was Awesome with a capital A, if only it had a DVD Drive, it would have had a fighting chance againts the PS2.

The Dreamcast was an amazing console dude just failed because of the PS2 being what it was.
I think that the built-in DVD player in the PS2 had alot to do with its demise, actually. Not only did the PS2 allow watching movies and having larger games, it also was relatively protected from piracy for some time due to the used medium. It's a situation analogical to the PS3 and its BluRay. Not everyone could afford a DVD-Writer.

I'd put more blame on the failure due to Sega being what it was. Frankly after the Genesis, Sega never managed to figure out how to do anything right. By the time of DC, too many people were permanently alienated against the company.
