Do any of the USB loaders allow for the game image to be stretched (horizontally in my case, see post #9684) to fit the screen? I use Configurable USB Loader v70 and haven't been able to figure out if it can do that.

Sorry to harp on about this, just don't want vertical black bars on my plasma for hours at a time. The TV's aspect selection and burn-in protection (inserts grey bars instead of black) are disabled in game mode and can't be used.
Did you set it to Widescreen and Burn-in Reduction from your Wii's settings?

I did. Out of the 32 games I run from my USB HDD the two I mentioned earlier and the newly acquired Secret Files 2: Puritas Cordis exhibit the same issue. All my games are PAL versions played on 4.3e (real and emulated).

What confuses me is that the Wii system screen is also compressed when I press the home button within the game.

I guess this is a noob question. So a few years back, I did the Twilight Hack and added the Homebrew Channel onto my Wii. Then I burned some games, most of them worked but some didn't. After this I never touched my Wii again. I'm interested in playing Zelda and managed to get a free retail copy due to a store's mistake on my order, so now I'm just wondering. If I put that Zelda disc in now, will it force my Wii to update and then become bricked? And what if I wanted to continue playing other backups? Should I remove all stuff I did on my Wii previously (like the HB channel, and I think I have 1 or 2 backup loaders on it too) first? Which hacking method might I look for now? Or is there some sort of loader that will work on all the games that came out after the last time I played Wii?

Hope these are valid questions, I am pretty lost with all this right now.

Yes they are

Having HBC or loaders, etc does not endangers your wii.
Having done stupid things to SysMenu or the IOS used by it does.

If you have bootmii nows the time to make a nand backup.
If you don't, change that and make a backup too.

If your bootmii is at boot2, I would simply do the update and restore on fail.
The update will remove HBC, cios, etc but that can be restored using modmii if you ever want to.
That should be the fastest way to play Zelda.

Or use ModMii if you want too keep it moded

If you can't install bootmii@boot2 post a syscheck (see tutorial section) to get an idea of what you did back then.
I don't know how to interpret them but others can.

Thank you for the responses. I do not have BootMii so that's a start.

I just checked my system, seems that the firmware is 3.2U. I'll look into the other things you suggested too, thanks!

HackMii installer hangs at scam screen! I tried formatting my 2GB SD card to FAT32, it's still taking forever to show the Press (1) button or whatever after loading it via LetterBomb. I formatted my system memory (which I really shouldn't have done) because when I tried to take my Wii to Play N Trade, they verified the Wii in case it was hacked. Then today I decided I'd revisit my Wii, since I'm kinda getting tired of using emulators on my PC. At least I can boot dol files.

It's been a long time since I used any of the modded wii stuff. I have a European region console (pretty sure it's on firmware 3.2). I wanted to play Twilight Princess again, but sadly, I discovered I'd lost the disc (this was my 2nd disc, the first broke); so I downloaded the game (NTSC, as it had the most seeds), and tried to load on the wiigator gamma launcher (channel), forcing PAL 60, green screen. Forcing PAL 50: Green Screen. Unforced: Black and white game.
I tried using the neogammer WAD (V8 I think), same thing (but the screen doesn't go green, it just doesn't load).
How do I fix this?

Hey guys~ I'm a long time reader, but first time poster. I'm looking for some pointers for where to start with bringing my softmodded Wii up to date. I originally modded it on firmware version 4.0U via bannerbomb method nearly two years. I used it quite a bit back then, but it's kinda been collecting dust for a while now, so I haven't really updated much of anything on it since the original mod. I've got it set up with BootMii for making NAND backups, and I've been using USBLoader GX, but was thinking of switching to Configurable USB Loader after a friend showed me his Wii setup. Anyhow, with that information as my starting point, I'll move on to my objective that I would love to get some advice/help with:

Where should I even start if I want to bring my Wii up-to-date with firmware version 4.3U, the most recent cIOS version, and set it up to use Configurable USB Loader? I've seen and glanced over HackMii and ModMii, which are entirely new things to me, so I really don't know where to start with trying to get my Wii caught up with the Homebrew scene. I made an account to start posting here because I haven't been keeping up with the developments and advances for the past year or so of Homebrew mods, possible issues with Wii firmware updates coming from my current 4.0U, much less IOS/cIOS updates, new preloaders, and so forth. I finally just acquired a motion plus Wiimote, so I grabbed Skyward Sword from bitgamer, and it came with a pack of "fixed" IOS wads for people with older softmods/firmware versions; using USBLoader GX, the game failed to load on my Wii as it was, but I'm a bit hesitant to just start installing those while I'm still so out of touch and behind the times with the Homebrew scene.

Here's the list of IOS wads that were packaged with the game image:

It'd be very much appreciated if some of you guys who have been staying up to date with the Homebrew scene could give me some suggestions, pointers, and things to look out for in the process of trying to get my Wii updated to 4.3U with current cIOS/IOS files, etc. Thanks in advance guys, and cheers to my favorite console modding community!

*EDIT* I just talked to a buddy on steam who told me that there's no benefit to 4.3 vs just stopping at 4.1, so I suppose for firmware updates 4.1U is my goal then, and not 4.3U.

Ok, so I tried copy/pasting WiiExplorer's dol file to the root of my SD card, selecting Multi-Mod-Manager, and then loading the HackMii installer as an app. Exact same result. (I forgot to download .Net Framework 3.5 SP1) I'll try again afterwards...

Thank you Storm Trooper! I was missing the necessary WADs, and now I have the Homebrew Channel for the third time.

It is the games that are causing the issue as they do not seem to support 16:9 completely. I've managed to sort out my TV with regards to changing the aspect ratio while playing the Wii, however, even when the burn-in protection kicks in, there are still two thin vertical black lines between the game image and the TV's burn-in protection. The Secret File games look best when I set the Wii to 4:3, it's just those damn black lines.

Thanks to all for their input.

Hey everyone. I'm sure this has been answered a multitude of times but, well, you see how large this topic is >_>
I need to mod a Wii. All I really need it to do is run WADs (like Virtual Console game channels), but I need it to run them off the internal hard drive and not off an SD card (I have an SD card with which to load them onto the Wii, but I can't keep it in, as it's not my Wii I'm modding). I know absolutely nothing about Wii hacking. How do I go about setting this up?

My softmodded Wii isn't loading games from my hdd since I resized the partition (a 1tb hdd from 80gb wbfs-format to 150gb wbfs-format). Now whenever I try to start a game there is only a black screen. I've tried it with USB Loader GX and CFG Loader, disc channel works. The resize of the partitions made me delete all the games and put them back on to the hdd and it haven't worked since. I wonder if the iso-files became corrupted when I transferred them all to the ntfs-formatted part of the hdd and later transferred them using wbfs manager. What do you guys think?

I think you should get rid of your wbfs partition for good and use FAT32 with wbfs files

I tried to format the wbfs drive to FAT32 but the only option was NTFS. I tried that and just put some wbfs-files there with Wii Backup Manager, but I couldn't load them. I also have an SDHC-card in FAT32 that I tried, but it still didn't work. Is there anything else you need to do for it to work?

download modmii, from the main menu enter "U" for help setting up a usb-loader. The usb-loader setup guide assumes ur wii is already properly softmodded, if this is not the case for u, u should first use ModMii Wizard feature to softmod ur wii before setting up a usbloader

I have a quick question: I modded my Wii a couple years ago while it was on FW 3.2 (I think). If I wanted to update it to the current mods and add a USB loader would it require that I update the firmware manually or are thoe updates included in the softmod files? Is it OK to just follow the method in the sticky thread on here?
