Alleged new PS5 model surfaces online with slimmer profile and removable disc drive

new ps5.jpg

After a video of its upcoming Project Q handheld was leaked, another Sony gaming hardware has apparently leaked, this time it's an alleged new PS5 model. The first images of the PlayStation 5 (CFI-2016) "Slim" model appeared on a Chinese forum and was followed up by a video showing the casing of the model.

The video was uploaded by Twitter user Better Way Electronics who said in a follow up tweet that the new model is thinner but also that the case's SKU does not have A or B (Disc/Digital), as is the case with the current PS5 model. This could mean that the alleged CFI-2016 PS5 model could feature a removeable disk drive, which could be sold separately or as a bundle with the console.

Such a PS5 model was reported to be in the works for a September 2023 release by Insider Gaming and in a recent court hearing, Microsoft said that it expects Sony to release a slimmer PS5 model this year that will cost $400 as the current PS5 Digital Edition does. So maybe these could have been referring to this allegedly leaked CFI-2016 PS5 model.

However, these news and leaks have to be taking with a measure of salt as new PS5 models have not been confirmed by Sony. But do you think Sony will release a new PS5 model this year?

Just curious, where was it proven to be fake?

Also, if this is a fake... what's the point? It barely looks any different than the original model. That's gotta be some of the lamest clout chasing in the gaming rumors world ever if it is indeed fake.
Every single year, most of the Nintendo news websites keep posting stuff like "INSIDER INFORMATION SAYS THAT SWITCH PRO WILL RELEASE IN [CURRENT YEAR]!" and people eat it up. They know that people go batshit crazy whenever any hint at a new model for a console is dropped and are trying to take advantage of that.

The shell is empty. You can see light bleed through the bottom screw hole for the stand as he tilts it. There’s nothing inside.
This is supposedly a leak from one of the places that only manufactures the shells, not the internals. The design is believable enough, and there have been one or two other sources which posted pictures that line up with these as well.

Ok... and this PROVES this here is fake?

You said we had proof that this is fake. Where is that proof? We have speculation, sure. But that alone is not proof.

If not fake, then rip the dream of a ps5 that looks good.

Would have traded mine in, if there were good deals and the new one looked good, but if it's not fake, then it looks just as bad as the current one.

Not necessarily, the PS3 and PS4 both had 2 physical redesigns on top of the original design (one of the PS4s also being a more powerful Pro model of course). It's possible that if this is real, that a second more physically aesthetically appealing PS5 redesign could still arrive 2 or 3 more years later as well.

Well... that proof was supposed to be it just being an empty shell, but apparently it's normal for empty shells to be shown in leaks.

Looks more like a model than a finished product, and barely a replacement cover at most.
A normal PS5 with a disk drive is too heavy to handle with your wrist alone and this could easily be a fake.

Not saying it's not based on real future designs but it doesn't even look slimmer or smaller than the current model to begin with.

It doesn't seem slimmer. It looks "smaller", but similar in dimension. Maybe going against the assumption is their shtick. "Semi-mini"?

Well... that proof was supposed to be it just being an empty shell, but apparently it's normal for empty shells to be shown in leaks.

If the shell is being developed and produced, we can assume that parts will be put into them. Otherwise it's very expensive and serves no meaningful purpose. I don't see the purpose of 3dprinting this and showing it off. That'd be my last guess.

The general idea is to lower the initial price point (no disc drive = $100 saved), incentivise digital sales, simplify the production (one SKU versus two SKU’s) and still give users an upgrade path without resorting to a stupid dongle (see: external 360 HD-DVD drive). The package actually looks kinda seamless, but I’d take the video with a grain of salt - we’ve seen high quality fakes like this before. Good design nonetheless. Gives off strong Dreamcast modem/BBA vibes with how the drive module attaches to the console and matches the shape of the body.

The shell is empty. You can see light bleed through the bottom screw hole for the stand as he tilts it. There’s nothing inside.

Yeah more than likely a fan project trying to capture clout, better reason not to believe anything until it's from the official mouth of the publisher.

I presume the line on it is supposed to accomodate the rumored detachable drive... honestly, doesn't look too bad tbh, i wonder if the line will glow

In the video it can be seen that the "line" is only on the faceplates. The thick black part in-between is still one big piece and doesn't separate in two. Also, the video shows the drive is still in the exact same location as the current model PS5 and doesn't appear to be detachable. Apart for all of that, why would there be a drive on both sides? I don't see how anyone can think this is real.

Edit: It looks like the current non disc PS5 with some modifications. If it's real it certainly doesn't split in two where the faceplates split. If anything, the bottom faceplate comes off as normal but could be replaced with a bottom "faceplate" that contains a disc drive.

@The Real Jdbye, I thought about that and I have blank DVD's and Blurays but honestly after like 90 songs I just listen to it a couple of hundred times toss it out and burn something else or have like 2-3 CD's. Florida here the heat in the car tends to ruin the CD's after like a few months even commercial pressed ones don't last too long.
