Will this 1 TB SSD work as an external hard drive? To store games? Can I plug it in as is?

I have an old 120gb SSD connected to a USB to SATA cable. The Wii U can power it from one USB port perfectly fine, which is handy as the other port in the back has a USB Ethernet adapter in, then the front two USB ports have the GameCube controller adapter connected.

Maybe I got lucky with the SSD based on the comment above, having Googled it the SSD I'm using draws 2w max when active (120gb Corsair Force 3).

As long as it uses less than 5w you should be fine with a single port to power it. However if you want to be extra sure you can connect the SSD to an externally powered USB 3 hub, which is then connected to the Wii U. The SSD will then be lowered by the hub, not by the Wii U, and thus you don't have to worry about the power draw being too high. You can also then connect even more things to the USB hub, like an ethernet adapter or the game cube controller adapter.
