So I got xenoblade chronicles on wiiu and I quickly found out it supports the gamepad! (and its a vwill game) So if this is the case... then can't we get it to work outside of the game?

I dunno, can ya?
I mean in theory yes. However me? develop it. Yah no. I'm a complete noob to trying to code for wiiu. But then again........ If there was some sort of.... actually. If we booted the game and then instead of it booting the title, it boots the vwii menu instead. or is it a custom ios? I do not know because if its a ocios that is inside the title itself then that might be tricky to find. However the compatibility is clearly there and isn't just a pipe dream.

Doesn't that run on the wiiu side anyway? I don't know much about how the wii works, but im pretty sure every time you go to the menu, or load a game, a different operating system is ran, and if that was the case, it wouldn't be possible.

Your correct on that I think. However it doesn't mean a person can patch the game and ios to support the game pad. Because I know we have the tools. We just have to figure out how to prevent the gamepad from locking itself into the no gamepad mode or find out how its doing it. Because upon vwii boot it probably has a special instruction telling the gamepad cannot be used....

EDIT: I got a idea... if I use caffine to log what is being accessed, I might be able to find which ios the system loads before booting into vwii. Possibly.... (assuming that it will show up in the log)
Also it appears that this completely kills wiimotes. So that may mean that trying to get this to work and have wiimote function will be futile... possibly.
EDIT2:also it has its own image for when you tap the screen! you know how it would say wiiu pad cannot be used in wii mode. well instead pressing the touch screen will show a no sylus icon on the left... Its offiical i think. It has to be in the ios
EDIT3: course its not going to be easy as I thought. nintendy wouldn't be that stupid. However I'm going to boot another game that should not have gamepad support. And if by any chance I may find somesort of file difference in the structure. I seriously wish some expert was looking into this..

vWii games kinda leave Wii U menu.
Still, no one knows how it manages to support gamepad [Maybe a custom IOS running in the memory?]

Thats my thinking. because it drops all wiimote support with this "mode" and the ioses are responsible for wiimotes right?

At this point, no. People have been looking into the Gamepad getting it to work as an actual controller in the vWii or at least vWii Homebrew apps. No luck yet, but it is supposedly possible.

Now, if you're looking for individual Wii games to work with the Gamepad, then I think that might have a better shot of becoming a reality sooner. All that would need to be done would be for someone to determine how to inject any given Wii game that could be played with a classic controller into the few Wii titles playable directly from the Wii U menu that can be played with the Wii U gamepad like Xenoblade or Sin & Punishment. However, this idea has too been looked into, and again, so far no luck. But I have a feeling that sooner or later, we'll see something in regard to this.

Well I have a theory as to why people can't get it working on homebrew. The first primary issue is how to config is set in theory. I almost bet you that the vwii ios, and how the wiiu boots the vwii is the primary factors. Its more than likely its a two to three stage setup, a command being sent in the wiiu to switch to vwii mode, and the second command tells if the gamepad to go into vwii mode. and then once in the vwii the main boot (before the ios so like vwii boot0 and boot1 in 3ds terms) tells the gamepad if it can use controls or not. And IT has to be a ios responsible for gamepad emulation (as in control setup) , because the ios is responsible for wiimotes right? And if thats the case then well. We are going to need to somehow change the vwii menu to use another ios FROM the wiiu menu. Since you know all wii hb apps retaining to system switching kill vwii.

Wii U doesn't use IOS, only vWii does that.
Wii U has different architecture than vWii, and Wii VC games leave Wii U menu so you can't adapt changes from Wii U mode to vWii mode.

Yes, this is I believe one of two vWii games that support the gamepad (does anybody remember the other one?). But if you put the disc in, I'm pretty sure it won't support the gamepad. I believe it has to be the downloaded version, as it loads differently than if you go to vWii mode and load the game.

Xenoblade Chronicles and Pandora's Tower.

Best option right now is to find an exploit in Xenoblade Chronicles which is able to boot into the Homebrew Channel.
All other options have been looked into without much luck.

In theory, the Wii U should still think that we are inside XBC but we are running homebrew instead, and with that we could try to enter other places on the vWii's memory.

Won't REing it show anything related to tweaks/modifications it has?
It's the first step to even do anything to it.

Oh that.
Yes, that should be the way to go, but honestly who with the knowledge is doing so?
We have better chances just trying to exploit Xenoblade instead of breaking down every component of the Wii VC games.
Technically you need to search for cIOS or Gamepad/Controller trace.
Exploiting the Wii VC game will be impossible if single vulnerability wasn't found in code.

@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though

    I appreciate the insight!

@TwoSpikedHands just switch, all the knowledge you learned still applies and most of the code and assets should be the same anyway
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    and realistically they wouldn't

be able to play it legally anyway since they need a ROM and they probably don't have the means to dump it themselves

why the shit does the shitbox randomly insert newlines in my messages

It does that when I edit a post.

It inserts a newline in a random spot.

do y'all think having an sd card that has a write speed of 700kb/s is a bad idea?
trying to restore emunand rn but it's taking ages... (also when I finished the first time hekate decided to delete all my fucking files )
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@Karma177 that sd card is 100% faulty so yes, its a bad idea
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
even the slowest non-sdhc sd cards are a few MB/s
  • Karma177 @ Karma177:
@The Real Jdbye it hasn't given me any error trying to write things on it so I don't really think it's faulty (pasted 40/50gb+ folders and no write errors)
