Hardware WiiMotes used with touchable 3D holograms

I posted this in the news section but wanted to include it here to see if we can generate a practical homebrew use for the way they are using the WiiMotes:

Notice the WiiMotes above, with IR leds around them. Hmm. Interesting way to track hand motion.
I assume the WiiMote is picking up the reflection of the IR leds from the hand?
I am guessing there isn't a Wii controlling all this.

Does anyone have one of those night vision security cams that has the IR LEDs all around it?
What does the WiiMote calibration screen see if you try to illuminate something with a bunch of IR like in the video?
