Online/Miiverse
Video chat, other networking services require a Nintendo Network ID. Register with a password, your birthdate, gender, area of residence, and e-mail address. Your Nintendo Network ID can be used to exchange contact information in the same way as Friend Codes. eShop purchases are managed by Nintendo Network IDs, and can be played by other users on same system.
12 user accounts are allowed per Wii U system. Nintendo Network ID won't be limited to Wii U and will spread to other Nintendo platforms (presumably 3DS).
Miiverse available in all Wii U games. Ask community for help (setting to automatically hide spoilers), leave comments, read others thoughts, submit screenshots as you're playing and more. Support for accessing Miiverse on your smartphone or PC will come in 2013.
Ability to video-chat with friends using the camera on the controller. Can doodle on screen together.
New Super Mario Bros U:
- 1280x720 resolution
- Has "source lighting" from fireballs and star-lifts.
- Similar world-map to Super Mario World. Different paths in world-map.
- Features off-screen play.
- Ask Miiverse community for help in getting Star-Coins.
- New characters/enemies (NABBIT)
- Can use R button instead of A during off-screen play + touchscreen.
- Boost Mode, Time Attack, Coin Battle Mode.
- Ability to edit coin-placements in stages (for Coin Battle Mode I assume)
Wii U Menu
- 3DS-style grid menu with WaraWara Plaza (Miiverse) separated between both screens.
- Can switch menu to TV or GamePad screen using button on top-right corner.
Home Menu
- Press Home Menu to access applications that you can multi-task with (Friend's List, Miiverse, eShop, Internet Browser, Nintendo TVii and more).
- Sync Wii Remotes (perhaps additional GamePad in the future) and view currently connected controllers
- View instruction manual of current application/game
