There are still votes going on? Who creates them?

Yeah, I'm not sure if you're familiar with the RiiConnect24 project, but they've revived a good majority of the functionality for those Wii channels, the only one they haven't really got working yet is the Check Mii Out channel, and while the Nintendo Channel works, not all of it works yet.

But, it seems as though the polls are mostly community-created. There's a "Suggest a Poll" option on the channel, and the dialect and use of punctuation seems to fluctuate between polls slightly, not to mention that RC24 mentions the feature on their page for the channel.

I wondered myself how that worked. Everybody Votes was fun. The weather feed was nice, but I'd only want the news channel back if it was like video game news.

The weather channel is nostalgic to me, so I really appreciate it working again. The news channel, however.. While there IS tech news you can view, it doesn't seem like video game stuff is there, and when it's just on the Wii Menu, it scrolls through the trending topics, most of which are.. unfittingly dark to see on the Wii.

I've been playing the Wii pretty consistently for over 10 years. Between emulators, Gamecube games and the Wii library, my console gets a pretty heavy workout. I actually just beat The Last Story for the first time a few days ago.

I played the Wii for over 7 years, then I switched to Dolphin on my PC because it's a lot more convenient for me. As of recently when I started modding my Switch though, I've been using my Wii less and less.
When I look around online, it's like the rest of the "gaming" world has moved on. It's hard to find forums for discussion that aren't completely abandoned, or incredibly slow.

I know what you mean. I used to spend a lot of time in the RVLution forums until they shutdown (which I was extremely disappointed in).

I'd also like to mention with NewerSMBW Plus in development, I'll be coming back to the Wii soon after it releases.

Sad thing is that there are places like Reddit where you can congregate and talk about specific subjects in subreddits made for them... But whenever I check things like R/Wii or R/GameCube and such is just either people bragging about their collections or what they bought, people posting memes, or people asking for help (which is completely fair, of course), but there's so little actual talk about games themselves or anything even somewhat meaningful that I find it kinda frustrating, and even when a talk about a game o matter appears often ends up in people arguing.

...On second thought, seeing the current climate of the gaming community, I'm glad I don't delve on forums and such all that much.

I had no idea they were making a "Plus" version of Newer SMBW. That's pretty great news!

I have had many nice nights with a wii that can not only play wii games but emulate so much and play GC. It really can do so much when you hack it. But I would say Gamecube is the actual set of games that never got old for me.
It's great to keep playing more of the games if you hadn't played them instead of just trying to keep up with the times!

I have a humiliating confession to make......... I'll still play Wii Sports.
Also Wii Fit was actually amazing

I know links are not allowed but how do these mods even work?
Are they patches or different WBFS files? (I'm thinking of Newer SMB, Smash Bros Project M and Mario Kart Wii Mods)

They come in both. Majority of mods don't get a WBFS release, you usually have to make WBFS of mods yourself. But I know I got a hold of a Newer WBFS and I still use it with Dolphin sometimes.

EDIT:
Riivolution actually made it really easy for noobies to use game mods, but I could never to get that to work with Dolphin (that's why I got the Newer WBFS).

Never got into the Wii, I hate motion controls

I wish you a good morning too.:)

i feel the same years ago.
"What is this ?"
"This can not work...."

And today ?
I am very happy we have homebrew and USBLoader who supports the good Gamecube Controller.:P

A little group of Wii games are very good to control with the Wii Motion.
- Dancing Games

You play games that support the GC controller with the GC controller or even those who don't?

Anyway I disagree regarding the Wiimote. You can play anything with the Wiimote+Nunchuk Combo just as well if not better. The only exception are fighting game (although Smash works suprisingly well this way).

We've had our Wii since my brother got it on launch day, all those years ago.

Since then, I've enjoyed many amazing titles. Super Mario Galaxy 1/2, Metroid Prime 2/3, Wii Sports, Mario Kart Wii, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, and Animal Crossing City Folk. Also our GameCube game collection [strike]and don't forget those badly ported 3rd party games![/strike]

I've probably poured more time into Brawl and MKW than I have any other games in their series. I've also spent hours in Newo's and BoringKate's homebrew games, they're a great deal of fun.

And with amazing mods like CTGPR, the fun doesn't stop. CTGPR still gets updates to this day, that makes me happy.

Thanks to RC24 and Wiimmfi, I've been able to enjoy the online services more than I would've before, with more features than what we had with WFC/WC24 (still at the loss of support for titles, though.)

Our Wii has been through two disc readers, more than a few bricks, and too many c/mIOS installations to count. Although I'm usually only on it for the EVC polls nowadays, I will always cherish my Wii and will always come back to it.

Badly implemented motion controls can feel awful, as shovelware can certainly demonstrate, but guess what, badly implemented standard controls can suck tremendously too (hello, "hold L3 / spam X for running" among many others) and those can happen in any game. But for some reason those get a free pass even if they're generally despised.

There's a great deal of games with well implemented motion controls, some to do standard actions, such as shooters, sport games (golf was the biggest winner there) or racing, some to create unique experiences, such as the skill-based Kororinpa games or Let's Tap, and there are way more than people give credit for. Mostly because that would mean people would have to actually give a damn and try to both look for those games and spend a few minutes to understand what and how the game expects you to move the controller.

Well implemented motion controls can feel so natural that you often forget how much they can improve the overall experience until you have to play something without them. Case in point, the most basic example would be Aiming Controls.

The Nintendo Switch got time ago ports of Resident Evil: Revelations 1 and 2. They came with the added feature of gyro controls, so you could move the controller or the system to help you aim. They were really well received overall. In fact, is one of the most requested features when companies port shooter-related games to the Switch, some games such as Doom got gyro controls added to them post-launch, even.

Recently, Capcom also released Resident Evil 4 for the Switch... And it's a bare bones port without any improvement. People have been pretty vocal about pointing out how disappointing is this port, some people arguing about the price (which is insulting, because it costs more and they didn't add anything), but the biggest complaint about it was the omission of motion controls, which many expected and among many of the comments there were praises for Resident Evil 4 Wii Edition as the best version still thanks to the motion controls and how much better they made the game, even if it still gave you two other non-motion control schemes.

RE4 Switch could have been the new best version (HD, Portable & on a big TV and with the Wii motion controls added). But what we got is a giant wasted opportunity.

While I perfectly understand not liking, or wanting motion controls on everything (they shouldn't be shoehorned into every game, and offering different control schemes is also recommended), I also think there's something to be said about the weird fear some people had/have for things that are different to what they're used to, to the point of having this vile reactions and condemn any implementation of motion controls even if they're central to the game's design.

Actually, no.
You can't have Wii controls on Switch.
Gyro is not the same as Wii Pointer.
It can be pretty good but without adjusting for the pointer drift (or whatever it's called) due to the lack of a sensor bar, it's not as good. And even then, Gyro is best for control methods in which the pointer stays pretty much in the middle, while the Wiimote is best for the control method in which the pointer moves around.

Oh, I'm with you about that. Wii Aiming controls will always be better because the sensor bar not only avoids drifting, it also gives the player a point of reference, which can help tremendously to aim well. That's something I mention whenever Zelda: Skyward Swords appears in a conversation. It's aiming controls based on the Motion Plus were inferior in every way to the previous game, Twilight Princess, more "basic" but also reliable IR aiming.

This would be a similar case. Should have said gyro motion controls, instead of porting 1:1 Wii motion controls, which as you say, will never be a perfect transition. But even then, between the resolution and frame rate increase, plus portable factor, even if the motion controls weren't as brilliant as the Wii Edition, it would still be a pretty big improvement in my opinion compared to the other current ports of the game.

I'm still a big Wii fan. Ps3 and Wii are the newest consoles I own, I refuse to pay for online games, DLC, and all the other bs that came with the new gen.

The Wii has a MASSIVE library, so many games, to this day I play Wii Sports with my family, everyone has a Mii, I play House of the Dead and Cabella's Hunting games with friends when they come over. Sometimes I just have it on for the backround music...I've had mine since launch, like all my Nintendo systems its been on for days and been abused, but still works fine.

Eventually I'll get a Switch, but I am not really excited for it, I just want it for Pokemon.

Underrated Wii Games:

Rampage Total Destruction, Kirby's Return to Dreamland, The Last Story, Mario Strikers, Sonic Colors, House of the Dead games, Cabella's North American Adventure and all of the Cabella games, All Remington Games, NiGHTS, Wario Land Shake It, Spiderman Shattered Dimensions

I played Wario Ware Smooth Moves at a summer camp when I was really young and I was dead set on buying one and a couple of years ago I gathered enough money (like $30) to buy one and now its hacked and sitting in my family's living room as the gaming portion of our media center. Me and my sisters still play Mario Tennis N64 on it.

@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
