Why?
It's got a big community (tons of people own it)
it is compatible with every game i have played so far
its got a built in cheat system
moonshell comes with it
it works as a passme
microsd support
what makes other cards better than the R4? i'm EXTREMELY happy with mine.
The points have already been proven quite a few times. I never hated it. In fact, I was gonna buy it until I heard about the M3 Real (BEFORE it came out).
I need SDHC support, because I had a handful of roms, homebrews, and I needed it as a multimedia player, seeing I sold my Sansa to a friend of mine for money.
I had over 6 gigs of stuff, and I was very careless with small objects. As you can see already, I just wanted one micro sd, so I can carry everything in one.
Back on the subject, the reason why people don't like the R4 nowadays, is because,
1. The price. It's over priced compared to other carts that do more than the R4 does, at a lower price. Why would you buy a R4 when there's better, and cheaper products out there?
2. The features. Yea, most people won't need it. But, there's still a huge majority that uses it. The R4 just plays games, and that's fine by me, since that's all I need it for. But Each people have different needs.
3. SDHC support. This is a very important factor. If you think people should just use 2 gig carts, you're wrong. People need more space, and I'm currently using full 8 gigs out of my SDHC card. I have 4.2 gigs of roms, and I'll be using it for my new Mp3 soon anyway.
4. The noobs, and the consumers. Well, this doesn't fit everyone who has it. But lately, a few of my friends got the R4. They keep talking to me how awesome it is, etc. But they think this is the only cart available. Even though there are better, cheaper carts out there. They just keep saying it's the best still, even though they have no experience with other carts, and just neglect other people's opinions. In short, fanboys who don't do research anything. They're quite annoying.
All the stuff you've mentioned is a standard feature of a flashkart. Like I said previously, each people have different opinion. And the community is becoming smaller, bits by bits. It had it's glory, but it's gotten too much attention. Then, it let itself get beaten by other carts, and now, here we are.
