I used to hate how all the pokemon names were in uppercase. So every single pokemon I'd catch, I would rename it with lowercase letters.

I've always named the pokemon I use and keep in a party. Real names to like Belle, sherry, james, etc etc. Mostly because I've kept the idea in my head since childhood that they feel and have emotions. They are meant to be taken care of. I know it isn't true but it helps me get into the games a hell of alot more. Also try not to repeat names, and so far I haven't even though I rotate around 50 different pokes xD

I don't nickname them. Back when I first played Blue like 15 years ago or whatever I named a few of them but it's not a good idea. Just keep them with their default names, is how I prefer things. Do what you want tho, personal preference.

I nickname them when I feel I'm probably not going to be without them in my party for the rest of the game. Sometimes the starters don't even fall into that category.
But otherwise, it's just I CHOOSE YOU, MAGIKARP!
