I like how it lifts and separates.

Starting with the DS Lite the box no longer references it as an abbreviation for something else. The device is simply the Nintendo 3DS with no deeper meaning. I think this is pretty sad since I like calling the DS the Nintendo Dual Screen.

I know DS stands for Dual Screen

Well...

QUOTEWhat does "DS" stand for?

To our developers, it stands for "Developers' System," since we believe it gives game creators brand new tools which will lead to more innovative games for the world's players.

It can also stand for "Dual Screen."

Troll one: 3rd DiSappointment or 300 Dollar System. Those were just some lulz ones, not actually trolling.

Actual one: 3D DS (DS stands for like "Dual Screen" or something and the DS is compressed into a single letter since 3DDS looks retarded). 3D System seems plausible too.

Some like to call it the 3rd (generation) ds.

technically the 3DS is the 4th generation.

DS Phat > DS Lite > DSi/DSi XL > 3DS

*facepalm*

ds lite, dsi, dsixl are all remakes of ds.

3rd gen = GBA > DS > 3DS
So...why would they start numbering the generations at the GBA? I thought the original Game Boy was considered the 1st generation of Nintendo handheld gaming?

sorry accidental, i mean GB > DS > 3DS

fixed first post.

with the Generation thing here is what i think they are trying to say...

DS and DS Lite = 1st Gen since hard ware and software is pretty much the same.

DSi and DSi XL= 2nd Gen due to the loss of the GBA slot and way different software and a Cam.

3DS = is the Number three in this line.

Haha well, to me, the 3DS can mean:

1. 3D DS (Developer's system or dual screen)
2. 3rd Dimension (or generation) System

I prefer the 2nd. I heard from some places saying that the 3D wasn't added into the system initially, but was just a final add-on to the improved DS system. Maybe this isn't true, but the 2nd meaning sure sounds much better to me.

As for game generations, i would say that the 3DS is the 3rd generation. GB family -> DS family -> 3DS?
Also, (i'm not sure about this) if the NGP is the 3rd gen, i bet the 3DS will be as well.
