Some like to call it the 3rd (generation) ds.

technically the 3DS is the 4th generation.

DS Phat > DS Lite > DSi/DSi XL > 3DS

*facepalm*

ds lite, dsi, dsixl are all remakes of ds.

3rd gen = GB > DS > 3DS

Nintendo has said many times that the DS is not an updated version of the gameboy. the gameboy is gone. The DS is a DS, and the 3DS is like what the GBA was to the GBC.

I think what they're trying to say is the generation. The DS is the next handheld and technically the successor of the GBA. We're talking about the generations of the handhelds, not what the system is.

I really was only talking about the set of gen with ds in it name. :/

Generation of the ds' not generation of handhelds.

or maybe 3rd family of handhelds.

3rd gen ds = ds/phat > DSi/xl > 3DS

I agree with melter (except for the remake parts)

3DS would be the 4th gen.

GB > GBA > DS > 3DS

(2nd Gen) GBA > GBA SP > GBA Micro
(3rd Gen) DS > DSL > DSi > DSi XL

Actually GBC had games designed for it's use and not the GB or GB Pocket. It's exactly the same as saying the 3DS is a 3rd gen handheld as it's only a DS with 3D.

Actually, the 3DS marks the 3rd handheld lineup. In the original press conference where they announced the 3DS, they said it's the successor to the whole DS lineup. Which actually makes it the 3rd line.

Game Boy series->Nintendo DS series->Nintendo 3DS series

Fun fact: The DS was meant to be sold as a separate product simultaneously with the Game Boy lineup, but that plan pretty much failed when they put a GBA slot on the DS.

It could just be 3rd Dimension Screen.

I can't believe they actually stuck with the name "Nintendo 3DS". Personally, I don't have any problems with it, but when the rumors were going around I thought it was just a code name.
