Remake- Basically a game remade with enhanced audio/graphics, new features and or new controls. Resident Evil PS1 to Resident Evil gamecube
If the story changes to much it may be a reboot

Reboot- The story is redone and it may have new gameplay to fit the current generation of gamers. Like X-Com or Tomb Raider
You should be able to tell if your a fan of the series.

Revival- A game that keeps to the current story in the series that may have changed gameplay wise and or may have a upgrade to graphics/audio to fit the current market it has to be dead a long time. Duke Nukem Forever and Donkey Kong being examples
Basically a sequel somewhat of a game that hasn't had a sequel in a while.

Spinoff- A game that can have a change to the story and or different gameplay. Mario Kart is an example basically something not part of the main series.
You should be able to tell if it is or is not part of the main series.

Reimagining- A game that has taken a change in direction gameplay wise in a significant way like Metroid to Metroid Prime or Resident Evil to Resident Evil 4 it isn't a reboot since the story has been redone and may be considered a revival.
If your RPG starts playing like a shooter or your survival game has turned more into a action game it is a Reimagining in a way.

Not all games are just one on this things but most are.

Christ, Lurker2. You really have a fetish for game lists, don't you? :P

Anyway...my list (from least to most favorite):

-Donkey Kong Country returns: just plain out awesome. It took the team some balls to NOT blindly go with everything that was a plus (like not being able to switch your monkey, or leaving out K. Rool and his gang) but still I'd say it's playing it safe.

-Kirby's Epic Yarn: I kinda have to vote for this on my girlfriend's behalf. Though techically a spin-off, it's the sort of spin off that hits bullseye. And not in a totally different area (in the way that kirby's pinball land was actually the best pinball game on the gameboy...or handheld...or even system): it manages to find a proper niche in the common platformers without being stale.

-Rayman origins: I admit it: I wasn't much of a fan of earlier games (in fact, I never even played the non-rabbits games before origins). But 'discovering' those games wasn't like finding a hidden gem. Perhaps I didn't give them enough playtime, but earlier raymans seem stale and boring.

EDIT: crap...almost forgot:
-GTA 3: I think this goes without saying: the third person aspect, the freedom and (maybe more than anything else) the radio stations. It's all plain out better. I have to mention, though, that I've barely played GTA3. But I make up for that with many hours of Vice city and San Andreas (IV is one of the many games on my TO DO list).

-Fallout 3: Fallout 1 & 2 were awesome (tactics not as much, but still...). Fallout 3 was somehow totally different and all the same. At the very least, it incorporated everything that made the first 2 games a success.

...and my best revival award goes to...

-starcraft 2: I may not have played the original as much, but damn, that sequel is awesome. It stands to something that Blizzard manages to even come near the success of the original without "just" making a graphical overhaul.

Notable mentions:

-Diablo 3: I missed the success of the predecessor. I'm well aware of its following, so it's most likely a no-brainer. But the matter of fact is that I have never played it. And therefore, I will not vote for it (and diablo 3...yeah, it's fun. I kinda got bored with it at some point, though. I think it's mostly not my kind of game).

I'd like to take this time to say that I absolutely hate what they've done to Crash and Spyro.

As for ones I like, Rayman origins was pretty much exactly what the series needed to be awesome again. And fallout 3 since it took the awesome theme from fallout 1&2 and pretty much turned it into oblivion with guns. (which is a good thing)

I'm surprised Donkey Kong Country Returns and Kirby's Return to Dream Land isn't on this list.

And how the heck does Zelda II count as a revival? It came out only a year after the original!

Donkey Kong Country Returns is on the list and Zelda II was a reimagining since the 180 degree change to gameplay.
Epic Yarn might of marked the revival of the series instead of Return to Dream Land or might of been a spinoff you know what I'm not going to argue about this. The list stays as is unless someone has a game to add or has a good reason why something should be removed.

I don't know why you're treating it like an argument when I'm just giving an observation.

But anyway since you mention it, I just gave you a good reason something should be removed... Zelda II not only came out barely a year after the original, but they were the only two games... there was no "standard" as to what made a Zelda game, yet. Following that logic, you could just as easily say that the US version of Super Mario Bros. 2 was a "revival" since it changed the gameplay so much from the original. But that's just my opinion. I'm not trying to force you to do anything.

Sorry, I just felt the argument went way out of hand in the last thread and I wanted to avoid that since I feel a lot of posts are just that.
I felt that Zelda II was a reimagining not a revival due to massive shift in gameplay but I might be wrong.
The question is "What is your favorite revival/reimagining of a video game(series)?".

@SylverReZ, I also heard one of the Prince of Persia games was so unfinished that it required the "24/7 online" drm so a puzzle could be done and the game could be finished. And that when the Ubisoft servers were closed the (cracked) game was impossible to finish or something like that
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
@Xdqwerty, That's extra scummy. Ubisoft nowadays ship out incomplete games like Skull and Bones which was being worked on for nearly a decade now.

I like that games can be fixed after the fact, hate that it's being abused via beta tests... And DLC... I was a 7800 owner back in the day and loved Impossible Mission, turns out I couldn't beat it because it was actually impossible lol
