"Dino Crisis 2" for PC gets the "Classic Rebirth" mod treatment by developer Gemini

The Classic Rebirth set of mods have been a main staple for many to relive and enjoy some of their favourite Capcom games on PC with the best possible quality compared to the other current options to play such games.

Developer and hacker Gemini has put years of his life to modify and improve upon the obscure PC releases handled by SourceNext of some of the most beloved Capcom games, like Resident Evil 2 as well as the rest of the original trilogy of Resident Evil titles (RE1 & RE3), Dino Crisis 1 and now his latest work has just been released today, with the latest title getting the Classic Rebirth treatment being Dino Crisis 2.

Almost all of his Classic Rebirth mods offer quality of life changes to the PC releases to be able to enjoy the games in newer hardware and software, like changing old file codecs to newer ones for better compatibility, implementing XInput & Direct3D 9 (or above), higher resolutions, vibration support, bugfixes from the original releases, and even support for mods, which go from translations, better quality videos/audio to even a unique story mods like in the case of some Resident Evil mods.

For Dino Crisis 2 specifically, the main changes that come with the Classic Rebirth mod from its original SourceNext release are:
  • Replaces DirectDraw 7 with Direct3D 9, for improved compatibility with modern GPUs (and prevents rundll32.exe/GameUX from executing for no good reason).
  • Replaces DirectInput 7.00 with new input methods such as XInput, RawInput, DirectInput 8.00, and native keyboard support.
  • Replaces DirectSound with XAudio2.
  • Replaces DirectShow video playback with a custom ffmpeg-based player that requires no codecs.
  • Replaces buggy full screen mode with borderless window and fixes the aspect ratio to be locked to 4:3.
  • Replaces broken context switching module to avoid crashes at boot or in other random spots.
  • Fixes frame rate issue to provide smooth 20/30/60 fps support.
  • Removes the need to install the game, making it portable to another PC just by coping the data.
  • Restores missing, broken, or butchered graphical effects.
  • Restores correct music loops, missing sound effects, and generally improves volume levels.
  • Reworks the option screen in order to be able to fully remap controls, and change BGM/SFX volume levels. These options can also be changed in the config dialog that appears before the game boots and are applied globally, so they don’t change when a saved game is loaded.

Gemini has other features planned for subsequent updates of the mod, like adding OGG file support to allow for better quality music into the game (which is already coded in, but not configured due no OST packs being available as of yet), and also vibration support through controllers.

Those interested in trying out the new Classic Rebirth mod for Dino Crisis 2 can do so by visiting the Classic Rebirth Website and downloading the pack for Dino Crisis 2, and some better quality mods if the player so desires.

On the one hand, Capcom's running out of Resident Evil's to remake, and Dino Crisis would fit the RE Engine like a glove.

On the other hand, the series didn't pan out, with each sequel selling half as well as the last.

According to Vgchartz:
Dino Crisis 1: 2.4m units
Dino Crisis 2: 1.2m units
Dino Crisis 3: 0.4m units
Dino Stalker (Gun Survivor 3: Dino Crisis): 0.2m units

The data makes plausible sense. By DC2's release, the PS2 wasn't far off. DC3 got panned by critics, and Dino Stalker required the GunCon 2, making it the least accessible.

With all that in mind, Capcom may see it as a dead end or a series that requires more legwork to retool or spin-off.

Yes you are correct! Apologies. Yes it is a ps2 lightgun game also. I just modded my ps2 but have sadly learned that most lightgun games don't operate with a HDTV and have to use CRT due to the nature of the way the gun picks up the screen. Sucks

I'm able to play them on my very old ps3 with hdtv support and still guncon compatible. Time Crisis 2 and 3 look pretty good on the ps3 and a decent led.

Sorry to derail the tread, but I'm shocked this is a working method. I thought GunCon 2's and HDTV's were completely incompatible.

A friend of mine had a "PCSX2 and Nuvee" setup back in the day that was more proof-of-concept than playable. Apparently, PCSX2 has full GunCon 2 support now, which is great news for enthusiasts.

This all reminds me, I wanted to buy a PC light gun for the longest time, but at $100+ USD, I hesitated and never bought one. Later on, I bought the PlayStation Move light gun and used it once with Time Crisis 4 on PS3. I never know what's going to gel with me and what's going to collect dust.

Yeah upon further research apparently they do not work with HDTV.s which is odd given all models of ps3 had hdmi out

My bad. I actually have been playing Time Crisis 4 with a guncon on hdtv, which is actually made for the ps3...
I just had a nostalgic flashback. The GunCon 2 had a composite male-female cable that went between the PS2 video cable and the CRT TV, which definitely wouldn't work through HDMI. I had completely forgotten about that part.
