What could they really do to the design at this point to improve the 3ds?

*Let it play MP3 and MP4 /AVC movies like the PSP.
*Give it an industry-standard 16:9 top widescreen instead of 15:9
*USB interface with your PC to allow drag-n-drop audio and video and pictures like the PSP.
*Have a proper image viewer like the PSP that can actually load your own photos on it from real cameras as opposed to only viewing 0.3 megapixel images off its own cameras.
*Do not coat the 3D Slider in silver paint or coat any parts of it silver (tacky and will wear out). Painting plastics silver is horrible.
*Make the 3D Slider far more thumb-friendly (fat with more surface area and usable grooves, not that thin fragile silver-painted stick we see now)
*Make the unit more rounded for easier hand-holding (unit is still far too square). See the original Game Boy Advance for curvaceous inspiration here. Ergonomics is still pretty poor and uncomfortable.
*Give it a dedicated hardware Brightness button as opposed to holding down Select + Volume (DSi).

We don't yet know that you can't play (your own) movie files, but we do know it can play mp3s and mp4s as well as 3d films in some sort of format, so to play your own videos very well could be a feature on the 3ds.
Top screen size wont change in one dimension but not the other, the 3DS has set its standard, its not going to be redesigned so that gamers have different viewing experiences depending on what version they have.
USB interface is unnecesary for me, my pc has an sdhc slot right in it, to connect it takes 0 effort.
Image viewer will almost definitely exist, you make it sound like we have all the info so far and if you haven't heard about it, it therefore isn't a part of the 3DS and should be, you're very wrong, there is still a lot of info on this device yet to be announced, for example its almost been proven that it has rumble, but Nintendo has yet to say a thing about this.
The thumb stick has been complemented time and time again by those that have used it, how can complain about something like that without having used it yet? Its supposed to be tons better than the PSP stick, so I'm not worried about this at all.
If you have trouble holding your DS(i), thats pretty sad, its very comfy in my hands, and yes I had the original GBA, but I don't really miss the design, it was great, but its not going to come back, certainly not for any redesign of this thing.

I just disagree man, I don't think much more will be done to the design this time, seems pretty finalized if you ask me. I mean with the GBA and original DS the redesigns were forseeable, this time I don't think so much.

Really? DSi only plays AACs, no MP3s.

QUOTE(duffmmann @ Oct 4 2010, 04:10 PM) its almost been proven that it has rumble

"Almost proven" ? That's an oxymoron.

Wahaha, not gonna happen. Ever heard of ChickHEN for PSP?

Yes. What does that have to do with a proper image viewer and/or USB connection on DS?

QUOTE(Midna @ Oct 4 2010, 11:59 PM) When did you use it last?
I used my DS yesterday. It's too square and the PSP is 100x more comfortable, having rounded edges and more comfortable grip.

I fully expect it won't be changed. The question being put forth was how you can improve the 3DS, so I gave answers. Yes the 3DS could play MP4/AVC movies, so some of those are assumptions that it won't. But it won't be doing it on a 16:9 display, so even if it does, some black borders are expected on 16:9 video, unlike the PSP.

USB interface is unnecesary for me, my pc has an sdhc slot right in it, to connect it takes 0 effort.

Actually to take your SD card out of the flimsy flap of the (current) DSi, eject it and put it in a card reader (assuming you have one; plenty of computers don't come with an SD card reader) is quite a bit more effort than just connecting via USB cable like an iPod or digital camera. If digital cameras, for instance, came with no USB cable and they expected you to just load your SD card in your computer, you bet that there would be a lot of returns. "How do I get my pictures in my computer?" the average customer would ask. Same thing here. Enthusiasts and the technically savvy will of course have no issue. But that is not the majority market.

Actually you're right that some of those things I mentioned are assumptions and we don't have the details. Which is why I'm basing a lot of my stuff off how the DSi is now. Anyway, I doubt it has rumble without a word from Nintendo. Where are you getting your information?

The thumb stick has been complemented time and time again by those that have used it, how can complain about something like that without having used it yet?
Where can you find me complaining about the thumbstick? I made no references to it.

Its supposed to be tons better than the PSP stick, so I'm not worried about this at all.

Again, no references were made to it.

If you have trouble holding your DS(i), thats pretty sad,
I didn't say I have trouble holding it. If anything I said it could be made far more comfortable and it's too square-ish.

its very comfy in my hands, and yes I had the original GBA, but I don't really miss the design, it was great, but its not going to come back, certainly not for any redesign of this thing.
If you find the DS comfortable, more power to you. I don't find it particularly comfortable compared to the PSP, and this is very apparent after gaming a bit longer. The square edges can be torture on the hands and it's something that is very possible to be redesigned and easiest to implement compared to some of the other things that I'd like changed.

I just disagree man, I don't think much more will be done to the design this time, seems pretty finalized if you ask me. I mean with the GBA and original DS the redesigns were forseeable, this time I don't think so much.
I didn't say the design wasn't finalised, I was answering a question about how the 3DS could be improved - basically giving some ideas about how it could be improved. Yes, we don't have all information on it, granted. For those things, there is hope. For the rest, there is hope it changes in the next revision.

I totally misread you here. I thought you said it might but you said "we do know". Actually like pachura mentioned, the DS and DSi both don't do MP3 audio and MP4 movies - at all. So I don'[t know where your information is coming from. I have both.

But it's true, it could be a possibility in the 3DS. I'm not holding my breath, though.

I'm going to stick to the launch version. DS Lite and DSi all seem like a waste of money to me for an upgrade. I bought the DS Phat at launch and I still use it today.

Although I have to agree, Gameboy Advance -> Gameboy Advance SP is a necessary upgrade.

A possible exploit.
Yes, but Nintendo are not in any way REQUIRED/FORCED to use libtiff for the tiff exploit. But then again, their own custom image viewer could open up exploits too.

'Cause of the display?
The DS Phat's display has nothing on the DS Lite and DSi (as far as brightness is concerned), perhaps colour accuracy may suffer - it's been a while since I tried my friend's DS Phat to compare.

With the original Game Boy Advance I liked the fact that you could bring spare rechargeable batteries and swap them easily. Nintendo don't make this easy now (unless you bring a screwdriver...). So you can't bring spare power and replace it easily without tools and fiddly operation when on the move.

Speaking of display, it would be nice if Nintendo allowed the unit to be used in brighter light without going all black: you don't have to be fully outside for the screen to wash out completely with the DS. Not nice.

In a refresh (or even in the launch unit) I hope they incorporate some of the newer displays coming out with better battery life and more readable sunlight-viewable displays. At the very least they could use a standard transflective LCD display right now.

It will be interesting to see what the 3DS offers here.

Actually I was exaggerating a bit with the image viewer thing. But I still think Nintendo would be smart not to give users that access.

Dude, people found exploits for the banners on the wii, which was an entirely new format.

I have used DS Phat for 5 years before jumping into DS Lite. In the past I thought DS Lite is a waste just like you. But when I got my hands on DS Lite I was really impressed. Not because of the size differences, but because of the screen brightness. It is much much brighter, sharper, and clearer compare to DS Lite. I do think that DS Lite is a necessary upgrade for DS Phat. For DSi or DSi XL, it is more of a preference, rather than a necessity.

That being said, I may get a launched version of 3DS. Though that depends if I can get enough money for both console and few launch title games. And if I can get a flashcart to work on "DS Mode" it will be a plus.

I'll get one at launch because the added features usually suck or are harmful. Just look at the DSi. Tougher security and removing the GBA slot were both bad for the players. The launch version will have the same or better features as the later revisions.

depends on what nintendo will put up on the next revision. I dont see any reasons why we have 2nd revision or LITE as we previously know it.

probably the removal of DS that's going to be in the LITE version. The 3DS is already a DSi engine so let's wait and see what technology has for us.

going to get the launch one since I dont see to wait for the next model.

I got the DS Phat at 2006, just the same time the LITE was released just because Im not yet aware of the DS or I didnt had the money back then.

This time, I will buy all revisions just like what I did with the DS Lite, DSi and DSi XL

I still have to get a DSi first or the XL, 3DS can wait and I hate the current design, the hinge is truly hideous.
How so? Looks smooth and uniform to me.
