Valve teases VR headset reveal for later this year

6KOVqOy.png

"Upgrade your experience," says Valve, on their newly created teaser page. We don't know what exactly Valve has up its sleeves, but it appears to be a VR device by the name of the Valve Index. Loads of rumors have been claiming that the industry titan was waiting to jump into the VR headset race, and it seems those claims are true. This May, we'll be treated to a full reveal, as explained by the Steam page, where perhaps we'll also see some Valve-developed VR games to go with it.

Unless you can make it affordable for the average user
I don't think it will sell

hopefully between $700 to $1000 bundled with the knuckle controllers and lighthouses. $1500 or more like the vive pro is a big nope for me.

I was hoping to hear some news about the vive cosmos this weekend but I guess they're not quite ready to come out with their announcement yet.

But wasn't valve already in headset race it co-developed the vive with htc.
anyways it seems like its still gonna use base stations which for me an annoying setup.

The 'average user' is still fairly in the dark about VR. Valve is like Apple, though, they have piles and piles of cash just sitting around. So basically they're free to target any niche market they wish. They'll easily beat out Oculus' next revision and own the high-end VR market if they target at least 1440p and 130° FoV.

But wasn't valve already in headset race it co-developed the vive with htc.
HTC owns the rights to Vive and released Vive Pro some time ago. Valve wants an HMD with their name on it, and odds are that the Index will be gen2 or at least gen1.5.

The beefy looking cameras on front make me hope that it has a lighthouse-less (sensorless) design similar to the new Oculus headset coming out.

VR are still expensive as fuck for how little game worth playing on it. For 500$ I would expect a full console with solid game library, not a goggle with two wiimote.

Probably optional, GabeN has confirmed there will be different package levels including headset-only. If I had to guess, the full set will come with the new v2 design base stations, and Valve's new Knuckles controllers. The latter is almost a given, although they'll probably want to change the name for the final revision.

“Should we make HL3? Nah! No one wants that shit! Everyone wants another fucking VR headset!” - Valve
I feel like if Steam didn’t have so much of a hold on the PC gaming market, Valve would have gone under by now.

Hopefully it has both wireless and cord in one model.
That's usually the way it works, you have to buy the wireless module separate or it would make the HMD too expensive.

Kind of an obvious statement to make. They didn't gain that hold by being stupid, though, Steam has constantly improved and added features through the years. SteamVR is the largest competitor in the PC VR space, so Valve knows exactly how much money VR games and VR hardware are raking in. Not to mention they were integral to the original Vive's design. It only makes sense that they'd continue to invest in it. They announced quite a while ago that they were in the process of developing three AAA games for VR as well.

I will guess $500 at cheapest, or up to $1200, gotta remember it might come with knuckles + new lighthouses, now valve might be a little more fair on price, since they dont gotta worry about licensing, other then this there is also a new oculus coming for $399, but I'd recommend everyone wait till their announcement, possible it could be mind blowing.

Bet its gonna be a bunch of tradeoffs just like Oculus did with the Rift S lol.
Unless they are aiming for the all in one experience like the Oculus Quest which i think is great to bring real VR to the masses.

  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    I appreciate the insight!
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@TwoSpikedHands just switch, all the knowledge you learned still applies and most of the code and assets should be the same anyway
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    and realistically they wouldn't

be able to play it legally anyway since they need a ROM and they probably don't have the means to dump it themselves
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
why the shit does the shitbox randomly insert newlines in my messages
  • Veho @ Veho:
It does that when I edit a post.
  • Veho @ Veho:
It inserts a newline in a random spot.
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
never had that i don't think
  • Karma177 @ Karma177:
do y'all think having an sd card that has a write speed of 700kb/s is a bad idea?
trying to restore emunand rn but it's taking ages... (also when I finished the first time hekate decided to delete all my fucking files )
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@Karma177 that sd card is 100% faulty so yes, its a bad idea
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
even the slowest non-sdhc sd cards are a few MB/s
  • Karma177 @ Karma177:
@The Real Jdbye it hasn't given me any error trying to write things on it so I don't really think it's faulty (pasted 40/50gb+ folders and no write errors)
