Meta teases its next-gen headset in new videos with color passthrough

meta cambria.JPG

A couple of days ago, Meta, the company formerly known as Facebook, shared teaser trailers of its next-gen headset codenamed Project Cambria. In contrast to the company's previous headsets, the upcoming device won't just be a VR one but appears to also double as an MR headset as it features color passthrough as shown in the video below:

In addition to the video above, another video was shared showing CEO Mark Zuckerberg wearing the actual headset on (albeit blurred). It shows an in-house experience called The World Beyond that merges interactive virtual elements in the physical world through full color passthrough. A similar experience is also said to be available sometime soon on the Quest 2 through App Lab.

Details such as the final design, specs or price tag haven't been revealed at this time but Meta's Cambria Project headset is expected to launch sometime this year. But given that it is being termed as a "high-end VR headset" in the video above, it could be priced higher than the Meta Quest 2.

Got 17 minutes to kill? I recommend this video:
I know, it's an older video, but it's about Mark's somewhat egotistic vision of the Metaverse. I guarantee this AR crap has to do with that.
Its more about him assuring that Facebook as a company does not die due to irrelevance because of the clear potential VR/AR has in the future being the next logical step in being a technology a lot of people will jump on, become semi-normal and even have social functionality.

In the same way that Facebook became popular in the first place and killed Myspace due to the fact that FB actually had a mobile app platform back in the early but growing market of smartphones which opted for the site to become so popular and easy to access in the first place over Myspace, FB is seeing VR/AR as the next Smartphone in terms of adoptable tech that might become popular and even one day rival the smart phone/PC in terms of normal use. They want in on that bandwagon front and center to be the social media platform of that technology because if it does become popular and they are not able to do this, they might see themselves become the next Myspace and fall into irrelevancy.

That's Mark's play in this whole "Meta" rebranding. He wants to ensure that Facebook is futureproof no matter what new technology comes out and could one day become as popular, or more so popular than the smartphone ensuring he will have a hold in that technology being the go to social media platform of choice.

Hopefully though, and given how late their play is in all of this with VR/AR they might not have the means to make this work out for them on this platform. Even if they make sales of their hardware most people are avoiding their virtual platforms like the plague. Its uncertain if they have a future in this market or not.

I don't see businesses using the Switch and that comes with a screen too. What I'm trying to say is if they really want to sell to other markets like businesses, then they need to actually prove this stuff can be used for that practically. They're doing a pretty poor job at that so far. Companies like Nintendo found their market and are catering to everyone in that market instead of trying to cater to everyone in every different market. It gives mixed messages as to what the device is exactly for.
By screen for the VR, I meant that the screen is a major part of it. The whole point of VR is that it's a "type" of screen basically. Different from just another device with a portable screen. And while this video probably isn't the most professional thing, usually professional things are shown more privately to businesses. Since Meta made their Metaverse presentation, a lot of companies have said that businesses are actually more open to listening about it now, since Meta has at least done a great job of making it seem like a big thing businesses could hop on.

I think the problem is it's not a perspective of "What can this VR device do?". If you look at it from that, yeah Meta is doing a bad job by talking about a billion things instead of focusing on one. But that's not what Meta is doing. They're trying to make a general VR system, much like how a PC can be general and not just for gaming or whatnot. (And also why it's hard to compare to a game console when they may do similar stuff but in general are too different.) Their perspective is more of "What can VR do in the first place?", and that's what they've been showcasing throughout their entire marketing so far.

I think eventually a lot of people are going to replace their personal screens. Why buy a personal TV, when your whole space can be one?
I'm not sure why anyone would want to sit about with a box on their head, when they can just take it off and be in the real world. Maybe it would be good for disabled people that worked from home but for the rest of us.....nah, I'd rather look at real people face to face than some made up pixel representation of what they think they should look like.

Yes, I've been a member here for a long time so I am well aware gamers come to this site. Not everyone that uses this site is an avid gamer though, and not every gamer wants to sit about with some stuff stuck to their head so they can play a game. Most people are happy to use a TV screen, projector or whatever. 3D died a death because nobody really wanted to sit about wearing glasses to watch a movie, this VR is a novelty at first and fun for a little bit in the same way 3d was, but after a while people that use it get sick of wires and having loads of crap sitting about and end up not using it. They just want to turn on the TV, Xbox/PS or whatever and play a game, and the other people in the room can see what they are doing.
The world is made up of many different people with different views, and gamers are the same - what some might like you can be rest assured there will be others that hate it.

you should probably do some research, quest doesn't need wires, also, vr has plenty of games to keep engagement, i play the shit out of boneworks, blade and sorcery, and beatsaber, and vr definitely cant be compared to 3d.

Also, you dont have to sit down to play, you can move about using the motion controllers, sitting around and not moving is way more boring.

Ok, but your argument there was, "why look at pixels when I got real life?" I just find that funny that argument can be applied to anything digital, let alone games in general.

The immersion wears off quickly. I've had it for less than a month and it just feels dull when you see all of these spaces in front of you but your brain registers the fact you can't interact with them in any way. It's easier to accept on a monitor/TV because it's not trying to replace your reality, it's just showing you a painting-like image. that's not supposed to be 100% interactive.

Not even mentioning the lack of locomotive movement in most games. I honestly don't see myself getting any VR games unless there'll be something substantial and exclusive to the franchise I like.

I did like watching anime and movies on a headset but then you notice the rays and your head starts to hurt quickly. At first the rays didn't bother me, so I wonder if those weren't rays but the scratches on the lenses?

3D looks really amazing, though. If you have any movies in 3D you want to watch, VR is a must for it.

I'm also wondering how does the VR impact one's vision. Looking at the screens in the dark isn't good at all and that's what VR is basically?
i mean i play for long periods and my vision is fine, it can fuck with your head though if the fps is inconsistent though. Also theres software to make moving in vr game more realistic, like where you can swings your arms to move.

says high quality colour but the visuals looks like 2mb cell phone camera image back in nokia days. I think people can tell between what's HQ and what's not in 2022.
