Y'know, most higher-tier graphics cards already have a TV-Out of sorts... And with a Bluetooth module, you can connect a gaming pad to your PC even now... so this is hardly a revolution.

Since DVI and HDMI are pretty much identical, any card with a DVI-Out basically has a TV-Out.

I'm guessing that latest controller update to several Valve games was a precursor to this (not withstanding the other rumours).

As long as STEAM can keep the user-control, in terms of game controls, mods, access, and reliability, this could be pretty big competition.

Given many "post SD" TVs have VGA ports and probably had Svideo (which kind of went to scart) before that.....

Anyway after so much "no were aren't" I am glad they said something. I do not use steam but I would be interested to see how this plays out- people have been trying stuff like this for years. If they can persuade a TV maker to stick one in a TV then that would be awesome.

This is definitely something worth buying once it comes out.
I hear this opinion on and on again, and all I have to ask is... Why? Why is this going to be worth buying once it's out?

Valve is planning to release a PC. An average, everyday PC. All that differentiates it from the usual PC setup is a controller and (probably) the size - for all intents and purposes, you can make your own "SteamBox" right now. How is this "desirable"?

Can someone please explain in terms other that "but it's Vaaaalve..." which I don't think is a satisfactory argument?

Uhhh, it's Valve. That's my argument. :)

It's more likely than not going to be a console that boots into Steam. That alone makes it better than any console out there at the moment.
It's not necessarily "desirable", specially if you have a decent PC already, it's just better.

Because it will probably be cheaper than a self-made PC of equivalent specs.

This is gonna suck...it'll be a mediocre PC, if it's successful it'll cause devs to stick to Valve's specs for PC development, which will stagnate innovation even more than the previous generation did. PCs' hardware limit should be the sky, not whatever Valve feels like selling us.

It's price that counts though.

Everyone goes "Who cares?" but if it can play like every game on Steam and comes at an affordable price then you're damn right it's worth it. I'm not made of money, even at $600 if this does play every game on Steam it's leagues cheaper than a $1500 PC.

Also it'll probably more tailored for the TV. That doesn't just mean big picture mode.

Wasn't Valve working on some type of Oculus Rift-esque hardware as well?

i thought everybody knew cocktails are like 75% ice
  • Veho @ Veho:
    Yeah but not like this.
  • Veho @ Veho:
It's not like they're complaining that their Slurpee is 99% ice or something, but if the cocktail calls for "shot of vodka, shot of vermouth, shot of gin, shot of Campari, three shots of juice, squirt of lemon" and ends up being a thimbleful of booze, that's a problem.
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
the funny thing is cocktails in norway are only allowed to have 1 20ml shot of booze
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    so..... yeah
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
we're used to only having a thimbleful of booze

    Booo.

same thing if you want whisky on the rocks or something, you can't get a double
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
but you could buy as many shots of whisky (or anything else) as you want and ask for a glass of ice and pour them in
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    it's dumb
  • Veho @ Veho:
    Maybe.
  • Veho @ Veho:
There was a comparison of the number of Ibuprofen poisonings before and after they limited the maximum dosage per box or per pill (i'll look that up). No limit on the number of boxes you can still buy as many as you want, so people argued it was pointless.
  • Veho @ Veho:
But the number of (accidental) poisonings dropped because drinking an entire package of ibuprofen pills went from "I need a new liver" to "I need a new box of Ibuprofen".
  • Veho @ Veho:
Here we have ketoprofen that used to be prescription-only because of the risk of toxic dosages, but then they halved the dose per pill and sell them in bottles of six pills apiece instead of twenty and it doesn't need a prescription any more. Yes you can buy more than one bottle but people simply don't.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
Usually accidentally overdose of ibuprofen here is from people taking like cold medicine then ibuprofen for a headache and the combination is over what they need
