I cannot find the answer to this, and maybe others have the same question... With the release of Yo-Kai Watch 3 in the US, I see that linking save data from previous games unlock special Yo-Kai. Is there any way to upload save data of games that are not owned so that Yo-Kai watch 3 can read the data an unlock the special Yo-Kai within the game?

No, you must have the main app installed, to have its main save too (extdata is a different beast)

Of course, it you don't want to install the prequel, you may be able to find a save of Yaoi Watch 3 with the bonus content already unlocked, but it may have subjectively unacceptable compromises (ie having another person's game already in it)
