So, basically, I was bored. And I decided to investigate someway to turn on the NDS (Lite) without the upper or lower screen.

Basically, the NDS checks if both screens are connected. If the NDS detects there is a ribbon that isn't connected or broken, the DS will just flash and turn off. Typical error with the damn F1 and F2. But this case, is with the lower or upper screen.

So, I was looking the NDS Motherboard, and I followed where is the upper and lower screen PINs.
So, here is the formula:
Nintendo DS (Lite) screen has 4 or 3 (?) Leds for the Backlight. Each one receives 3V, and the mA is 12mA. with a multimeter.
so...
R=(3V*4 Leds)/12mA =1KΩ (resistane)
So, we will use a 1K resistance!

Basically, you can use any resistance HIGHER than 1K, but I didn't tested it. I'd recommend the 1K resistance. Of course don't be so stupid using a 1M resistance.

What do you need:
*Your broken NDS or DS Lite that doesn't work the upper or lower screen.
*A 1K Resistance
*Solderess
*A brain

For the Nintendo DS:

Dissamble your NDS, and the PINs are named LEDC1 and LEDA1 (lower screen), or LEDC2 and LEDA2 (upper screen) The pins are the same on the NDS and DS Lite.

Get ready to start with your resistance and soldering. If you are asking for the colours, there are. Remember resistances doesn't have polarity at all.

In my case, my upper screen ribbon is broken, so, I will solder a resistance here. You only need to solder the resistance and that's all, you don't need to do more. It would look like this:

You can solder some extra cable to put the resistance where you like and don't disturb in the start and select buttons. In my case, I will not.

So, just test it... and Voilá! It works! of couse, without the upper screen in my case.

NOTE: If you lower screen is broken, you should solder the resistance in these PINs

This is from the lower screen.

Just assemble it, and it works, of course, without the upper screen or lower or whatever...

In this case I'd recommend playing GBA or Touch Screen games only. like Pokémon Ranger, Pokémon Mystery Dungeon, or some GBA games. same with the upper screen.

For the Nintendo DS Lite:
It's the same process as the DS fat, and the DS Lite motherboard doesn't changes at all.
Dissamble your DS Lite, and search for the LEDC1 and LEDA1 (lower screen), or LEDC2 and LEDA2 (upper screen).

In my case, again, I will use the lower screen again as a test. I will simulate my upper screen is broken.
This time, I will use extra cable, since there is the D-PAD and the resistance would disturb the D-PAD.

Solder it carefully... and solder the resistance.

Now try to turn it on, and Voila! It works now!

If you're going to turn it on with the upper screen ONLY, you should solder the resistance here:

Remember resistances doesn't have polarity at all.

So... I was bored again, so, eh. Hopefully this should works for someone.

@Alex4U
It seems very bad that you say that an investigation that I did 4 years ago you say that you did it. Also, you have limited to summarize the tutorial that I put and you take the photos of my tutorial.

And Yes, I'm m3dssimply from EOL. (now nitehack)
So please edit your post and name me and tell everyone where you got it. Or I will take action.
Greetings.

yall im torn... ive been hacking away at tales of phantasia GBA (the USA version) and have so many documents of reverse engineering i've done
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I just found out that the EU version is better in literally every way, better sound quality, better lighting, and there's even a patch someone made to make the text look nicer
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
Do I restart now using what i've learned on the EU version since it's a better overall experience? or do I continue with the US version since that is what ive been using, and if someone decides to play my hack, it would most likely be that version?
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    I appreciate the insight!
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@TwoSpikedHands just switch, all the knowledge you learned still applies and most of the code and assets should be the same anyway
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    and realistically they wouldn't

be able to play it legally anyway since they need a ROM and they probably don't have the means to dump it themselves

why the shit does the shitbox randomly insert newlines in my messages

It does that when I edit a post.

It inserts a newline in a random spot.

do y'all think having an sd card that has a write speed of 700kb/s is a bad idea?

  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@Karma177 that sd card is 100% faulty so yes, its a bad idea
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
even the slowest non-sdhc sd cards are a few MB/s
  • Karma177 @ Karma177:
@The Real Jdbye it hasn't given me any error trying to write things on it so I don't really think it's faulty (pasted 40/50gb+ folders and no write errors)
