If you've got a DS with a slot 1 flash card, you can use GBA Backup Tool, available in the downloads section.

I haven't actually tried restoring a save to a cart from a file, but it does a great job backing up the save file from the cart and it can also backup the ROM itself.

Give it a try and see how it works. I'm pretty sure the latest version is the 0.21, but I haven't checked to see if there's been an update in a while.

You can backup the rom to your computer, but you can't overwrite a game cartridge with another game or anything. It's called Read-Only Memory for a reason.

Ah, well I can flash over the save file which was my original goal so thats satisfying enough for me, although it would be cool to patch my firered to play shiny gold

Could you apply an IPS patch to a cart, perhaps? :3 Sorry if I'm derailing the thread

The only writeable portion of any official game cartridge is the save data, nothing else.

Yeah thanks, that answers all my questions on this topic, but thanks for the gba backup too, i can finally redo games without losing older saves now

i used to go out to the recycling center every couple weeks and look at the crts and other electronics people would drop off. Usually screens were broken or severely scratched from being tossed around. Did find a good one here and there, but never anything like a 1080i widescreen crt.
