I'm going to smash my switch. I have an original one.

For a week, about 20 hours I've been formating sd cards, the switch etc. I've followed 4 guides for installing hekate + sigoatches + atmosphere and then tinfoil. Everything looks good on them all, no matter which sdcards I use, which guides, which anything. I'm using the latest firmware, atmosphere 17.0 and latest kekate and fusee. Latest tinfoil. I install tinfoil, everything looks great, try installing games via nut, or freeshop, and right as it looks like it's gonna be fine and the games are 100 percent installed, bang... failed to register placeholder nca blah blah. Doesn't matter what game or which guides I follow after fresh installs and sd cards.

So then tried to use goldleaf. But of course when I'm trying to put games onto my sd card root, I create a folder called nsp, then copy the .nsp fil into that folder, eject the sd card and poof, the files magically delete from the nsp folder even if I put it straight back into my PC, the nsp folder is empty.

So try dbi? Download the latest version of dbi and the configuration, I copy both files onto my switch folder, inject payload, go into the album and of course, the dbi icon is a folder with an exclamation, and when I click it I get a big list of errors.

A week thus has been going on and I'm really feeling cursed.

Any suggestions?

Run that SD card of yours through H2TestW

Sound a lot like bad sd cards as the other also pointed out. You didnt happen to buy 4 identical cards at the same time did you?
Otherwise he K how you eject the cards from your computer. Make sure there are no locked files

They're all different ones, 2 I got from amazon, only 128gb ones. SanDisk. One of the games I tried to install was only 6gb. I do remember having this working before and installed persona 5 and octopath traveler on the card using tinfoil. Now no matter what I do tinfoil throws up failed to register placeholder errors. I'll run a check on all 3 cards later. I just bought a USB to USB c dongle. Do you need to have a USB 3.0 USB stick to install using goldleaf via USB? I don't have one so I presume I'd need one knowing my luck

No, you shouldn't need a USB stick. You should be able to plug it in to your PC. Also, test your SD card with H2testW before anything crazy (like the others have said.)

Are the cards formatted as fat32 or exfat? Exfat is known to corrupt on Switch
I used rufus and formatted to fat32

When I plug my switch in with 2 different USB cable cables, and when I click on the PC option of course it says not connected, connect to PC with USB c cable. Even though when I plug int the switch it connects just fine. This is with goldleaf

why is it a red flag? and how do you launch homebrew through titles and games?
I haven't had a switch in years but iirc, the album applet causes homebrew to not take full advantage of the system memory which can cause bugs. I don't remember exactly how, but I believe there's a way to configure the system so holding r while opening any application redirects to the homebrew menu.

Edit: it seems you don't even need to configure anything. In atmosphere, just hold r while launching a title to open the homebrew menu.

Can I ask. Because doesn't the switch make a copy of game data somewhere so it takes up like double space and you can safely delete the backup data or something.
This probably isn't your problem just a suggestion to cut space?🤷‍♂️

Probably a false capacity SD
Does the switch still make a duplicate copy of game data somewhere else on the SD card because I remember that being the case and it was safe to delete. I probably am wrong but I seem to remember somebody complaining it was eating all their space. Maybe the author here has this problem
