Was GRUB actually gone or did it boot into GRUB's emergency/recovery shell?
Literally gone. There was nothing.
I didn't bother investigating that much though, and I reinstalled Linux Mint over it. In the long run, I never had problems with Mint, on my Thinkpad, at least.

I don't really use Linux for home use, but for servers I've been using Debian and lately I've been trying out Ubuntu Server because I'm fed up with packages being so outdated. Well, as far as I can tell, they're still pretty outdated on Ubuntu Server, but maybe slightly better?
I have had dual boot setups on my home PCs though, I've tried SuSE, Linux Mint and Ubuntu. I couldn't stand the WM/DE in Linux Mint personally, though I know a lot of people like it, so I prefer Ubuntu (with Gnome or XFCE)
SuSE actually turned me off Linux for years as it was the first Linux distro I ever tried and it was just difficult to use.

I feel it depends what you are looking for. Looking for something simple use Ubuntu looking for something advanced use Arch

Usually I prefer Arch. It has lots of up to date packages, and is customized the way you want it, because you're in control of the system. But GalliumOS is my second... it has great Arc-based GTK themes, and is customized for the hardware it's supposed to work on so you can just use it.
